Flower Farms

Post by cnkbud » January 25, 2006, 8:30 pm

HI guys,
Read somewhere where really good flowers are grown around Chaing Mai,
at least that's what they told me when I bought some in Bangkok a few years ago, and they were very good and cheap compared to prices here in the USA. Are there ar flower farms around Udon Thani that also supply the big sellers in Thai cities, and if so, do any of them have tours or allow individuals to visit, would probably make for a good day trip for one visiting there. What do I dozen good quality roses go for there, and what are some of the favorite flowers the gals like up there. Thanks and have a great day. Old Bud

There is (to the best of my knowledge) only 'Udon Sunshine Orchid Farm' in Udon. here they specialise in ...well - orchids, especially a uniquely bred orchid that alledgedly dances to music. It a slight movement and takes intense concentration.

here they do tours to see the dancing orchid and you can buy some unique perfume made on the site also. A tour means a quick look at the flowers and see the dancing flower - about 20 or 30 minutes

I dont know where the flower vendors get their flowers from here in udon - sorry.

A dozen roses costs aproximately 100 baht (maybe a little over that) and a display costs a bit more (not much). Roses are very popular choices here and the flower stalls near the shopping mall are great value.

There are plenty of flower growers if you take a trip out beyond Loei. These are too big for stopping trade only, although who they supply to I have no idea. Udon and Khon Kaen would be obvious markets for them though I suppose

You can, however, certainly stop and buy whatever you want; they also sell rooted plants for gardens, trees etc

Hi guys and thanks for that input, very informative. Man, only 100 bhat or so for a dozen roses, what a deal compared to our high prices here. Maybe when one of you next purchase some for your gal you might ask the seller where they get their supply from, probably from Chaing Mai but who knows. As for Loei province, sure would like to learn more about it but can't seem to bring up any really good info on the internet other than just standard tourist stuff. I did read a posting somewhere before from an expat member who has a home there and also has a place in Pattaya, sent him a personal msg asking for more info but never got a reply, maybe it's one of those best keep "secret" places I keep hearing about and sure would like to know more. Thanks again, have a good one and enjoy. Old Bud

Well Bud, just start a thread here and ask. I could tell you some but many people in Udon will have been to Loei (as its the nearest area with completely different scenery, at least if you want to stay inside Thailand), and can probably tell you all you want to know

Paul, The plant that dances to music that you can see at the Sunshine Orchid Farm is not an Orchid, but a relative of the tea plant. I went there last year to do a photo shoot, had a good day, met a film crew from Bangkok, and one my shots won got me a 12 at my camera club.
As for flower growers why not ask the guys who sell the flowers in front of Robinsons Mall.

Waiting for an early flight to Bangkok at Udon airport, saw a lot of boxes of flowers arriving from Bangkok. Was told this is a daily thing, no wonder they can be expensive.

Paul seriously, the tea has been accredited by both the EU and USA and carries a Thai certified health clearance. It is noted for its calming effect and is specially for persons of a nervous disposition. Its taste is quite pleasant, a bit like chinese tea. As you may be aware the owner recently died so I don't know the current situation but they used to brew a fresh cup for visitors. The plant from which it is made does indeed dance, quite energetically and responds equally as well to the human voice, yes even my singing, although I did feel a right **** singing My Way to a bunch of plants. They didn't seem to mind though.
