A Norwegian man has been arrested in Oslo on suspicion of sexually abusing children, including sexual assaults on underage boys while he was staying in Thailand. A statement released by the Washington-based Innocent Images International Task Force (IIITF) said Gjermund Eide, 47, an employee of Thai Airways International (THAI) in Oslo, was nabbed on April 6 following months of investigation into child porn websites where images of child sexual abuse were distributed.
The IIITF, which aims to fight commercial child pornography at an international level, said the investigation began in Canada in November last year, when an investigator of the Canada-based National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre made an Internet search and came across two images on a bulletin board known for the distribution of pictures of child sexual abuse.
The authorities tracked down the suspected user through his log-in names on the forum, email contact and the IP address that was allegedly used by THAI in Oslo.
Subsequent investigations showed that Mr Eide was believed to have stayed in Bangkok, at a condominium in the Klong Toey area, in August and in November last year. During this time he allegedly posted personal ads asking to meet young Thai boys.
Jaruvat Vaisaya, deputy commander of the Child and Woman Protection Division, told the Bangkok Post in a phone interview from Washington that the arrest was the result of a collaborative investigation between the FBI, Thai and Norwegian police.
He said that Thai police had searched the suspect's residence to gather evidence and submitted it to Norwegian police.
Pol Col Jaruvat said police investigators are studying the laws to determine if the suspect should be sent to Thailand to face prosecution
