Thailand's health-care business has seen healthy performance in the first nine months of this year, with all SET-listed hospitals showing net profit on higher revenue.
Bangkok Dusit Medical Services Plc (BGH), which operates the Bangkok Hospital, Samitivej and BNH hospital brands, posted the strongest profit of 996.658 million baht, a large rise from 597.25 million baht in the first nine months of last year.
Bumrungrad Hospital (BH) came second with profit of 842.11 million baht, a rise from 779.83 million baht in the same period last year.
Bangkok Chain Hospital (KH), which operates six Kasemrad Hospital branches, also reported strong profit growth this year, with net profit jumping significantly to 295.87 million baht from 159.41 million baht in the first nine months of last year.
Ramkhamhaeng Hospital Plc (RAM), which operates a chain of hospitals under the Ramkhamhaeng, Synaphaet and Vibhavadi brands as well as the Khonkaen Ram Hospital, Muang Loei Hospital, Phayao Ram Hospital and Khelang Nakorn-Ram Hospital in Lampang, came close behind with profit of 294.67 million baht for the nine-month period, a rise from 175.39 million baht last year.
The profit increase in the health-care sector was due to a rise in revenue from increased services.
BGH and subsidiaries generated the greatest patient service revenue of 11.31 billion in 2006, an increase of 55.2% from 7.28 billion in 2005, followed by BH, with revenue from hospital operations of 5.7 billion baht, a rise from 4.9 billion baht last year.
Profit was also recorded among smaller-sized hospitals located in provincial areas, with Aikchol Hospital (AHC) in Chon Buri reporting a profit of 89.12 million baht for nine months, up from 75.16 million baht last year.
Chiang Mai Medical Services (LNH) posted a net profit of 22.87 million baht, up from 17 million, with Mahachai Hospital (M-CHAI) in Samut Sakhon recording profit of 46.91 million baht, up from 36.14 million baht.
Wattana Karnpaet (NEW) in Udon Thani Province trailed behind other players, reporting profit of only 423,000 baht compared with 6.98 million baht in the first nine months of last year, despite increased revenue for the period of 96.56 million baht, up from 76.61 million baht last year.
The net profit drop was mainly due to higher expenses, as the company said it set aside investment for medicines and medical equipment, mainly in cash.

According to Morethailand.com:
That would make AEK part of Bangkok Dusit Medical Services Plc. So apparently they run with the big dogs. The Bangkok Hospital Group now includes provincial medical centres operating under the Bangkok Hospital brand in Phra Pradaeng, Pattaya, Rayong, Trat, Phuket, Hat Yai and Koh Samui.
Other hospitals in the group include Taksin Chanthaburi, Bangkok Aek-Udon Hospital, BNH Hospital, and the Samitivej Hospitals on Sukhumvit, Srinakarin and in Si Racha.
