Bus/Motorcycle, Ban Leuam Intersection, Again

Most anyone who travels the west side ring road knows the Ban Leuam intersection is the site of many accidents/deaths. Yesterday a tour bus clearly went through a red light and tagged a motorcycle. Someone caught the incident on a car cam.
According to a separate report from one of the local 'rescue' units, the boy driving the motorcycle died at the scene.

What is your theory on why the Thais are so slow / reluctant to get involved in these situations.
2 years ago a pick up lose control and over turned plenty of people around yet I was the only one to get stuck in.

the video made it painfully apparent that the big bus accelerated into a Red light and hit the motorcyclist. although the bus is shown stopped a couple of hundred meters down the road, no one from the bus ran back to check on the victim. A sad commentary too that while the Vid cam rolled on for over two minutes, nobody, not nobody, went to check on the guy.. Finally a few folks could be seen up on the median strip gawking.. I'm sure the bus company will pay due "compensation" of several hundred thousand baht and the driver may get off when he should go to prison for voluntary manslaughter (obviously and deliberately accelerated into the Red Light)....

The bus driver accelerated when they saw the red light - 100 metres ahead. What, if instead of an unfortunate single motor cycle rider, there had been a crowded pick-up or mini-bus coming from the right?

The bike rider was dead before he hit the road.

Hopefully 10 years in jail for the bus driver - but I somehow doubt it.

I was not there, but it looked like the motorcycle jumped the light as many seem to do in Thailand.
I always look to see that the traffic has stopped before proceeding through a '' green light" .

If you look at the video in HD, you can see the lights were flashing orange for 2 seconds, and then turned red 6 seconds before the collision. I would hesitate to attribute any blame to the very dead motorcyclist.

(Perhaps the bus driver was flashing his lights, and therefore had right of way. )

But I totally agree with your second sentence.

The bus only stopped because the motorbike was stuck underneath it.

From a few Thai press reports concerning the accident: the driver of the motorcycle was 14 years old. A friend, on another bike, said they were stopped at the light, but his friend raced off as soon as the light changed to green. The bus driver, 28 years old, said he couldn't avoid the motorcyclist. The bus stopped about 100meters from the scene of the accident with the motorcycle wedged under the bus chassis. Police said the bus had been traveling at a high rate of speed when it ran the red light.

I think a lesson can be learned from this video . All farang cars should be fitted with a video cam as a great form of defence should you become involved in any accident..That of course only applies if you are driving within the law

Those pink Roi Et buses are always going for it thru this area
Saw 4 buses in a row ignore the Kut Chap set of lights but they were turning right to go into town so the thru traffic just had to sit there and wait

In this case not sure anything less than an 18 wheeler would have survived that impact.
Too often you see the young motorcyclists watching the crossing traffic signals rather than their own, all for the sake of moving off 3 or 4 seconds earlier.

Too comman here in Thailand but why is a 14 year old allowed to drive?

but 2 wrongs don't make it right

14 years old I understand one can get a Bike license here in Thailand
In some countries once can get a Learners Drivers License for automobiles at the age of 14

Canada and USA seem to be the youngest at 14 years of age

There might be some reluctance to assist, fearing the police will think you're involved in the accident. This was the first thing the police asked me, when, bar just one other, I stopped at a Phuket accident. The Thai are very superstitious, so I wonder if there's concern about bad luck or death.

But a terrible incident here. I really can't make out the lights, but an unfortunate combination of a speedy bus (with a timetable to maintain?) just not wanting to brake/stop and a motorcyclist zooming off unnecessarily quickly.

I've had my own near thing with a bus. Overtaking tuk tuk, blind bend, wrong side of road, not wanting to lose its' speed, coming straight at me.

Police said the bus had been traveling at a high rate of speed when it ran the red light......Well What A SURPRISE !!
