Udon Thani - Some 400 people Friday morning protested at the Udon Thani Military Airport, demanding the government to cancel its contract with Singapore, which allowed the island state to use the airport for military training.

The contract was signed by the Thaksin government in 2004 for Singapore to use the airport for 15 years.

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said his government had not yet discussed the issue but would have to take into account relations with Singapore and other Asean countries before making any decision.

The Nation wrote:The government has no plan to review Singapore's use of an airforce base in Udon Thani, Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said Friday.

He was speaking as some 500 protesters gathered at the Flight Squadron 23 in Udon Thani to air their opposition the use of the airbase by the Singaporean Airforce.

"We have no plan to discuss Singapore's use of Udon Thani airport. Our policy is that we would base our consideration on the mutual relationship. Not only with Singapore but other Asean countries as well," Surayud said.

The protesters included representatives of the people's federations in 19 northeastern provinces as well as of People's Alliance for Democratic movement.

They accused Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra of stealing national properties and assets.

Relationship between Thailand and Singapore took a quick downturn when then prime minister Thaksin sold off his shares in Shin Corps to Singapore's Temasek Holdings early last year.

It experienced one of its lowest point after the government permitted its deputy prime minister S Jayakumar, to meet with Thaksin in Singapore late last year.
