If you read up on the Potash deposits in the "Udon North and South" areas you'll find the assays determined they were between 300 and 500 meters beneath the surface. This will entail sinking shafts to the level of the deposit (estimated a several meters in thickness) and excavating it in "hall and pillar" style.. The sylvinite containg the Potash is then brought to the surface for processing. The problem is that "processing" means using massive amounts of water to separate the Potassium/Potash elements from the ore. Although APPC has sworn they will recycle water and put the tailings back in the excavated caverns, it still means lots of water consumption plus a salt/dust problem..
I believe that this huge building project on the east side of Udon is part of the Potash mining. I could be wrong but witht the projected 2016 "in-production" date I see no other structures from Nong Takai to Udon which resemble a Poatsh mining head (You can Google Image Potash Mine to compare). https://www.google.co.th/maps/@17.33685 ... !1e3?hl=en
The APPC plans on moving the Potash via truck for the early part of the projected 25 year mining endeavor and then by rail. If they SRT ever gets double tracking done to Udon they could spur off to the mine heads (there will be two in Udon) quite easily..

Well anyway you cut it doesn't sound good.I doubt seriously there will be any inspection besides the contents of the envelope

with the pittance of a 50 satang per tonne and 1.50 baht per tonne that the company's agreed to pay for a "health fund" and a "development fund" I don't see much community help in the event things go awry.. Of course, you never know, when you look back in the 90's at this project, bands of village women in that area (the Iron Women) protested enough to get it delayed this long... Villagers are far more canny today and any goons brought in to suppress protests would be quickly splattered all over You Tube and Facebook with the attendant international news media interest..

Well there is a good chance it won't happen ITD has the contract and as usual don't have the money to do it. ITD has already over the past few years backed out of two contracts, one in Lao an one in Myramar,

based on that article with ITD stating if all goes well with the final public hearings, "production will start by the end of the year," it makes me wonder exactly how much prep work has already been done?? It they expect to start extracting Potash by the end of the year, do they already have tunneling started that we don't know about? The deposits are at 300-500 meters in depth.. How do they get down to that? Shaft mining or a sloping access tunnel dug with a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM)... ?

There was another in a looong string of meetings concerning the potash mine on 29 June at the Rahjapat University conference center. About 500 people attended the meeting, including about 150 green shirt folks who protested the mine. 100 police and military personnel provided security.
A slide that depicts the various locations for mining activity in the Nong TaKai village was shown. I've never seen such a slide......so for those interested....or those who might be living in/around that area.
Starting at the 7o'clock position on the photo and going clockwise:
-the Nong TaKai train station (7)
-the mine
-untreated water holding area
-brine water (the grey box)
-tailings pile (yellow box)
-pile of dirt (brown box)
