Udon 125 Year Anniversary
Udon 125 Year Anniversary
Udon will be celebrating its 125th anniversary on Sunday, Jan 7. If you've never seen a fur-ball, I'm sure there'll be one around the statue circle sometime during the 7th.

Re: Udon 125 Year Anniversary
Like a lot of things in Thailand.....t.i.t.
The city is having a big ceremony in front of the statue circle on the 18th of Jan, from 6AM to 8AM. Lots of monks and all the city's government officials will be there. I'm awaiting word on the light festival at Nongprajak....will post when I get it.

Re: Udon 125 Year Anniversary
Is it a proper "light show" or just a few fireworks?

Re: Udon 125 Year Anniversary
Apparently the evening celebration on 19 Jan will include fireworks. A wide variety of activities are scheduled for 18 -20 Jan....at the statue circle on the morning of the 18, and at Nongprajak throughout.
Re: Udon 125 Year Anniversary
There are videos of this morning's dance activities at the statue circle and at the city pillar.......https://www.facebook.com/udontoday.news/ and https://www.facebook.com/%E0%B8%82%E0%B ... 144210623/ scroll down and you'll see them.
I've always found it interesting that many Udonites, young and old, wai as they pass the statue of Prince Prajak.....much as my father did, religiously, whenever he passed a catholic church.

Re: Udon 125 Year Anniversary
125 years under Thai rule. Prior to that Udon, and most of Isaan, was part of the Lao Kingdom centred at Viang Chan (Vientiane). This is why, until the late 1950s, the population of Isaan was referred by the Thai Government as Lao, not Thai. The communist threat prompted the Thai government to fully integrate Isaan into Thailand, and to convince the people to think as themselves as Thai.
We make our world significant by the courage of our questions and by the depths of our answers.

Re: Udon 125 Year Anniversary
Ahem. Hurried down from Phen, dropped son off at school and hoped still to catch some of the event. Charoen Hotel parking getting very full, but discovered many people still arriving. So, lots going on around the Prince Prajak statue itself, but no music or dance evident until maybe 0930 hrs! But what an impressive gathering – a sea of orange, young and old, a ‘togetherness’ feel and goodwill by many with apparently free food, drinks (and toilets). Bit like “we support our LOCAL team”? Selfies, photographs in abundance, of course, and time passed trying to communicate with the locals, finding out what part of Udon they came from etc. Needless to say, lots of beautiful ladies. I moved quickly at about 1130 to avoid what may have been the traffic jam of a lifetime. Only about then was the mass beginning to dance. Must say I enjoy the spectacle. What a contrast to the, often, madness of Songkran. Whilst I understand VIPs, respect and the religious element, shame the vast majority there had to wait so long to ‘perform’.
