Happened yesterday at 1.00pm on the road at Ban Hok Srigaw, just out from Nong Or.Apparently the motor bike on which they were travelling swerved to avoid a big hole at the side of the road which threw them off into the path of a following truck loaded with vegetables of some kind which couldn't stop. The mother died still clutching her baby in her arms. There is no mention of the father being drunk. A very tragic accident indeed .
Any blame must lay with the council for leaving those roads in such a dangerous condition. I experience quite often motorbikes swerving in front of me to avoid them.RIP.

Thanks, Trubrit. Sad, but happens way to often in this villiage!!! Actually, thinking about it (seeing the way people drive, both trucks and motorbikes)............surprised it doesn't happen more often!!!
On the road from Nong Wai to Nong Wua So, figure one full Vigo load of ashfault and a full work day would fix 90% of the pot holes on that 10-12km stretch of road.

Lots of villiage hotties running around, neck still sore!!!
Hey, they are actually doing small (very small) patch work on the road from Nong Wua So to Nong Or. Though standard half ass attempt.............do Thais understand quality control (yea, stupid question)?
More races tomorrow, but only local boats racing!!

A heads up for those that use the stretch of road from NongWai/Nong Or to Non Wau So.Contracts were exchanged this morning for a further stretch of that road to be resurfaced starting where the new section ended going on for a few more kilos but not all the way to NWS.Expect a mess and delays .

Thanks for the headsup!!!
Man, it's only 10-12km from Nong Wai to Nong Wua So you could pave the entire stretch in 3 days then add another day for painting the lines (not that Thai drivers pay attention to traffic lanes/lines)............but this is Thailand and even 5km could take 2 weeks. I know they have one of those ashfault trucks, though not wide enough coverage for just 1 run per lane.

The danger of drink driving.
Last night a member of our Tessa Bahn team was killed in a car crash. He was only 45 and leaves a teenage child and wife behind .He was seen in our local kareoke club drinking heavily in the early evening. He left at 9pm saying he was going to Udon. As he left he was so intoxicated that many motorcyclists rushed out to move their bikes, but no one stopped him driving. Ten minutes later, just 5kms down the road he crashed into a tree and flipped the vehicle over .A following car saw what happened and no other vehicle was involved. He apparently died immediately. This is whats left of his pickup.

They do it because they can, I used to complain about all the rules regarding driving in Canada but after seeing what goes on in Thailand with the lack of rules and enforcement I am grateful for the enforcement in Canada. There will always be a part of the population that needs to be controlled, unfortunate but true. Some people will always be like children.trubrit wrote:Last night a member of our Tessa Bahn team was killed in a car crash. He was only 45 and leaves a teenage child and wife behind .He was seen in our local kareoke club drinking heavily in the early evening. Sectarian Violence in Non Wau Sor
An unusual occurrence happened in Non Wau So yesterday, when a group of Buddhists, 20 strong, attacked the premises being used as a Christian meeting hall, destroying signs and religious artifacts in the process .They were protesting about what they said , was it's close proximity to a Buddhist temple .The premises were a double shop house located on the right just as you enter the village from Nong Wai direction .The Church had signed a five year lease for them at a yearly rent of 30k just over 3 years ago now , so two to go. The protesters claimed to have made representations to the Christian church, twice previously, without a satisfactory response, so decided to take further action .The police were called to the fracas who managed to control the situation but were unable to resolve the problem as the Church insisted it couldn't move before the expiration of the lease .So heads of Amphur were called and promised to find suitable premises for the Christian group to use .
In thirty years in Thailand I have never heard of a religious conflict like this before . I would add there were no monks involved, the protesters appeared to be a group of lay helpers from the temple .

I'd speculate something more is going on besides lay workers from the Wat having a beef with the Christians having a "bot" nearby...

The incident is reported at http://www.manager.co.th/Local/ViewNews ... 0000138997
From a quick read, it appears the abbot of a nearby temple expressing dismay at the changing religious beliefs of the villagers. Twenty villagers subsequently wrecked havoc with shovels and spades inside the church premises.
I'll try to do a full translation tomorrow......now it's time for Dog Whisperer.

I just hope this not the tip of iceberg, bigotry and hatred in Udon Thani Province.

Must agree with those thoughts but to me it confirms what I have noticed for a long time now, that is. A lot of Thais of varying status are becoming less tolerant towards the Farang and his lifestyle as more and more of us take up residence here .When I first moved here, over 30 years ago,the most common expression I experienced was " poody farang."Poody means , high class. Now I wouldn't like to list what I hear, there are many, but none of them are complimentary.Just ten years ago whenever I was in the old center in Udon, I could guarantee I would be approached by groups of students wanting to talk and practise their English with me . Now look. Even a friendly smile is totally blanked. If you understand just a little Thai you will hear rather de-rogatory comments on a daily basis about the appearance of many, or the attitude of some. Jai lohn seems to have replaced poody where we are concerned .No longer is marrying a Farang considered to be the ultimate achievement financially when many Thai and other Asian nationality men are displaying a rather more prosperous and I might add, more generous disposition towards their ladies.Even my own wife and some of her friends admit that marriage to a Farang is hard work and requires a lot of adjustment to make it successful. Many are not prepared to make that change and are becoming less tolerant of our foibles. I am afraid we have had our day, attitudes towards us are changing, we have got to get used to it.Prenders88 wrote:I just hope this not the tip of iceberg, bigotry and hatred in Udon Thani Province.

Have you seen in Bangkok News that the christian church in NWS has been demolished by vandals claiming they are from the nearby Budist temple?

The work has now started. They are widening the road on both sides so a lot of tree cutting going on and the gap is being filled with tons of loose stones so drive carefully unless you want a broken windscreen .trubrit wrote:A heads up for those that use the stretch of road from NongWai/Nong Or to Non Wau So.Contracts were exchanged this morning for a further stretch of that road to be resurfaced starting where the new section ended going on for a few more kilos but not all the way to NWS.Expect a mess and delays .

Looks like Udon's rapid developement is spreading out here to the villages. Just down the road from us , near the post office, the local farmer has donated some land to tessabahn to create a new road from the main one across to one running parallel to it. This in effect cuts his field in half but gives him the advantage of selling the plots each side for housing developement.I understand this will give him 16 plots of one rai each, which he is selling at 1 mill a time . Already two have been snapped up. :-" Last year this land was growing rice, this year to beat rising labour costs he grew sugar cane, but I guess the temptation to cash in was too much to resist.
