I dont think i miss the point.......When Harald and Noi runs the restaurant they have a mix of thai and farrang food and they done quite well even they dont get millions from that business. It was a god restaurant and a god meetingpoint and as i dont like to drink alkohol i dont hang around whit the farrang sitting oposite the market and about foodplaces around Nonwai theres Non i can stand....theres only one in the area that i can recomand and Thats mama Thungs place in Nong A. You see, i live here very long time.....i know wy i live here and what i prefer. As i said before, for 1 ore 2 times per week it could be god eat out and in Non wai theres is no place i where i can eat.......then i prefere my own ore my wifes cooking, clean and god food!!
I think we need to determine your idea of " A good restaurant'. I visited the place you mention a couple of times, once with a TV5 camera crew who were making a documentary in the area , which got him free publicity, and again with my Swedish neighbour, who described it as a snack bar and judging from the menu which consisted of mainly of burgers and pasta, I tended to agree with him .They were a very nice couple but I understood from his TW that she felt lonely, not coming from this area, and didn't really like the place .I can't claim to be a long term resident, just coming up to ten years, but in that relatively short time I have seen three attempts to establish more varied eating places, the most recent being a sea food buffet. It had to close as they didn't get enough custom to justify the stock they needed to get fresh each day .You mention a meeting point. well that has already been discussed on another topic and the conclusion reached was that most of us that choose to live here , out in the wilds, are happy to socialise with the locals , if at all, and don't feel the need of purely Farang company .I do know however that many of your compatriots do get together at a house in the village of Koh Nong San belonging to one of the original Swedish immigrant brothers, who used to run a riding school , perhaps still do , out there .When ever I have popped in there has been quite a crowd there .Maybe what you are looking for .Other than that as some have already said, plenty of nice places to eat but not the sort you would tend to dress up for .

Trubrit, please you can go back and look whats this tread was about (if your memory lacks...). It was about somebody asking for god places to eat in this area and what i was talking about was a decent place to eat a cuple of time weekly. About Harald and Nois place ...........she was making the second best meetballs i eat in Thailand.....and Harald is a god friend and i miss them bouth also the good food and bread they make. Thats what its all about.....the lack of god places to eat.

The socialicing you talk about is something i dont need and i have what i need in socialising whit my family and friends from all ower the world! For shure other people have other needs.......but thats up to them, aint it. S

You seem determined to make a debate about what constitutes good food. Well as that obviously varies its not one I want to enter, just to say I don't think meat balls would be very high on my list of priorities for a good restaurant. You mentioned a good meeting place so I naturally assumed you meant to socialise. Any way I have PM'd you a web site in Swedish which my friend gave me, where he tells me they arrange get togethers every month and are planning a Xmas dinner on the 25th December. Don't know if it will include meat balls though .

Actually TB was the OP, and the thread started out about news, construction of new Police Station, LOL, then switched to markets, and not until BigAl brought up the need for venues did you go in restaurants and such (if your memory lacks....) LOL.

Good food is relative, I'm happy with eating at the usual joints around Nong Wai / Nong Wua So. Really like the noodle shop in Nong Wua So.......noodles, moo kap, and boiled moo leg is really tasty.

Wife's mom loves that duck soup shop, seems whenever she's in th car I have to that unexpected stop for a bowl of duck noodle soup. Personally, don't really like the soup there and the wife can take it or leave it!!

Miss Noi's Place, decent burgers with fries. Do like the idea of a place in the villiage where farang food is available, but understand it's not financially feasable.

Nong Wai and Nong Or (in my opinion) doesn't have a good rest, best would be the coyote karoake place and its shrimp tempura and fried dried beef.

If I wasn't such an anti-social person, i'd recommend a villiage dinner out rotation. Rotating between homes with the host coming up with his own favorite menu. For me, it would be chicken salad and chili.....I can make a mean/spicy chili....add chopped onions and some sour cream!!!!! Next meal would be miso fish, a basic omellet and beef broc with mushrooms. Hard to get decent beef, so might use a substitute and make it chicken broc!!! Then meat loaf (Tops hamburger) w/ light gravy and baked potato (would do mash, but I prefer a baked potato) with steamed broc.
Other then that I can only cook a decent shoyu chicken with a Thai twist.....lots of onions and peppers.
I do know how to make a pig in a blanket (meat balls covered with lettuce or cabbage, with tomato sauce), but not my best meal!!! Oh, it would be BYOB.............

What's the chance that there are 8-9 people that would like to get a game of Texas Hold'em going in the sleepy villiage???

For fun of course (not really), as gambling is illegal in Thailand!!!!

Not much happening in the area just now so just an update . The piling has been finished for the new police station and the construction work proper has started . It is estimated to be completed late March next year . The heavy rains have disrupted a lot of municipal projects but haven't caused much in the way of chaos on the roads. However the locals are reporting the possibility of a reduced rice harvest owing to the amount of water in the fields. On the social front. Every morning I awake to the sounds of the boat race crews chanting as they practise for the annual boat race next month. I don't think it will be as big as previous years though as Tessabahn are feeling some financial pressures and are curtailing expenditure on purely social projects .
Some Farang will be delighted to know I was talking to a Swedish man, recently retired here, who is planning to open a continental style boulangerie/ patisserie on some land he owns near the dual carriageway, with his Thai wife running a Starbucks style coffee shop on the premises. Apparently he is a master baker and they ran a similar establishment in Sweden for many years .He is currently tracking the equipment on a ship bringing it over, so its more than a dream .
Cream cakes , yummy. Will post any further development .

My understanding the canoe races will be on the 7th and 8th of October, has been entertaining the past few years (a reason to have a few beers sitting next to the lake).

Hopefully the Swedish guy will make some pies, ie apple/custard/lemon marang. Would be an easy breakfast once or twice a week, coffee and a cream cheese bagel (freshly baked).

Oh, last night almost ran over a motorbike with the daughter in the car........fricking guy didn't have any lights on. Seem there are more bikes on the road at night without any lights.....not counting all the tak taks in the early evenings.
I mean dark bike, dark clothes (mao most likely, as it was after 7PM), no reflectors......I was only doing 20-30 kms making a turn into the main road to the house.....he came outta no where (my eyesight must be going)....scared the ---- outt me!!!

Couple of house break-ins in Nong Or/Nong Wai yesterday, my understanding 3 houses were robbed.

They got away with 6 baht in gold and a couple of notebooks, I'm sure Turbit has a better handle on what really happened.

Always seems robberies happen around the same time of year, end of a school year or at the beginning of one (baht to party with during the off time and money to pay for tutition).

They were daytime break-ins while the families were out in the fields. A few days ago there was another break-in (daytime again), but they got scared away!!

What were the two fines for? I've been pulled over at those road blocks a few dozen times (we go to the NWS market a few times a week). I flash my Thai license and they wave me on. Is there a problem with your license/registration/insurance/seatbelts?

Well, consider yourself lucky for 2 years, the law does state, international license, with possession of home country license also. Or, get a Thai license, or, keep paying tickets. Terrible when they actually enforce the law. At least they are not registered tickets, a perk for you, and them.

Nong Wai/Nong Or canoe races this weekend. They already have game booths, rides (octopus, bouncy-slider, paddle boat, train) set-up and operating.

Local canoes racing on Friday, all out races on Saturday (8 Oct).

On road blocks, use my international (good for 20 years and my stateside drivers license, never had a problem).

Only places I get stopped are driving between Udon and Nong Khai or Korat to Khon Kaen. Even with everything in order and not speeding (at least in those areas where they always set-up road blocks), it cost 200 baht......just to get them off your back!!!

i drive true this roadblocks allmost every day and they dont stop me anymore, my car is ok, my thai drivinglicense is up to date and, i dont drive to fast and as i know about the roadblocks, i dont drive in the right drivelane before the block!

Last time i pay 200 bath was more then 2 years ago and then they fine me driving to long time in the right driving lane. They say, the police, that you can not drive there more then 300 meters.

Regards Kjell
These days life seems pretty good and I eagerly look forward to the continuation!

Ok so I'd better get my thai or international licence, thanks for the input! :-#

Buggers stole my water pump out of the locked toilet on our lands today on Kut Chep road! They broke the lock & smashed the borehole pipes, geez you can not leave a thing out there anymore!!

Canoe racing days on the dam sounds great, hope to pop in on Friday!

All the rice lands looking so good after all the rains out this way

Not much going on out here in the sticks so just a brief update . The Bib have caught 3 teenagers for a spate of empty house thefts in Nong Or. Apparently they have done it before to fund their habit on using gaming machines. Can't understand why they just don't nick a machine .
A new car wash facility has opened in the petrol station opposite the police station in Nong Wai, run by a husband and wife team. Took my motor in yesterday, they did a good job , while I waited, for 130bht .So that's another chore I have got rid of . :-" No signs outside though, so you might not notice it .Its just behind the pumps .
In Non Wau Sor itself the new market is open and running. Plenty of lovely fresh veggies, no shortages here .
That's it from the sleepy countryside . :D

Trubrit,

Appreciate the updates, glad they caught those break-in artist (petty crooks). Any idea what villiage they were from, normally they don't break-in to houses in their villiage.

Might have to check-out the new carwash, normally hit the one at Big C once a week.

Seen some glass on the road to Nong Wua So, any info on the accident.......lot of glass so expect was a significan't accident.

Really enjoying the cool weather!!!!
