Holiday destinations?
yes it is. thong wua laem is my deciding point, when conditions right, i can stay there for long time. very relaxing, quiet, a good restaurant or two and fair priced bungalow right across from the beach. best place i know for sunrise coffee break.but its a long haul
if wanting amenities, there is always the cabana resort, hidden around the south end of beach. id conditions not up to par, then kata for me, one more day, but always worth the trip.
may hit khao lak, since ree has never stayed there, and they finally rebuilt the beach bungalows i stayed at before. one of the best places i've stayed and decent restaurants in the area. not sure about prices, as was a bargain before everything rebuilt.

A long drive, takes me 3 days each way.
According to my calculations, 3 days drive heading South would leave you somewhere near Jakarta (even alowing time to catch ferries)
My personal choice would be Cha-am rather than Hua Hin.
The beach is better. You can still get the horse rides, plus those old fashioned 4 wheel bikes. It's quieter (and cheaper ), there are plenty of "farang" resturants, and a few nice bars (plus a few 'working girl' bars that are not in your face, but still easy to locate if required).
There are nowhere near as many holidaying farang as there are in Hua Hin.
Hua Hin at night is like farang alley/soi sauce/soi 2 & 7 all rolled into one and doubled in size.
It's only a 20 min drive from Cha-am to HH, so an evening or two there is still easy enough. Any day trips from HH are just as easy from Cha- am.
Just my two penneth

I agree with Statto,
Cha Am is good for children too. Check out discount rooms online and Lonely Planet.
I drove it in one day, bypassing Bkk. After Saraburi and where the No 32 road joins the No 1 road take the No 9 road east to the No 4 road to Phetchaburi. Set off in the very early hours on a Sunday morning. One option is to have a stopover in a 400bht condo in Korat. The kids will love the Mall there too. Once in Cha am dont forget to visit the fish restaurants at the port, the Rama V1 summer house, and Hua Hin down the road. The beach and beach road are child friendly.

I think LA was trying to say pattaya was in the wrong direction for Samui/Phuket.
Thank you for all the feedback, looks like were headed for Cha Am in october, is the weather likely to be similar to udon at that time of year?

let us know how it us, haven't been there in a while, preferred hua hin, in the past, but now head further south. don't know how much time or driving you want to put in. at least 5 yrs since been there. on the main road to beach from hwy, if going the other way inland, there is a local market. if wanting to pic up some fruits and veggies, bbq chicken and sticky rice at local prices. opens early in morning. well, used too anyway.headed for Cha Am in october
