Phu Phrabat, a park with distinctive rock formations in Ban Phue district, will be nominated as Thailand's next World Heritage site, said Pongpol Adireksarn, chairman of the National World Heritage Committee. The application will be submitted in recognition of Phu Phrabat's natural and cultural significance.
World Heritage recognition will also be sought for the complex of Khmer sandstone sanctuaries of Phimai in Nakhon Ratchasima, Phanom Rung and Muang Tam temples in Buri Ram.
Mr Pongpol was speaking at a seminar on public participation in preserving and developing the Phu Phrabat historic park at Udon Thani Rajabhat University on Friday. It was organised by the Fine Arts Department to raise cultural awareness among residents.
Mr Pongpol said Phu Phrabat fits three of six criteria needed to qualify for heritage status. Firm evidence exists that unique local tradition originated in the park. With its unusual rock formations, the park also offered rare natural and geological attractions.
