Red shirts in Udon today

"Red-shirt supporters of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra from various northeastern provinces have begun converging on Thung Srimuang open ground in Muang district of Udon Thani province for a "bring Thaksin home" rally, reports said.

A large stage has been erected at Thung Srimuang. Police used mine detectors to scour the area around the stage and the open ground for bombs.

About 1,000 police have been deployed to provide security.

Kwanchai Praipana, leader of Udon Thani red-shirts, went up on the stage and vowed the make the rally the largest ever to demand the government bring fugitive Thaksin home from self-exile abroad.

He claimed about 100,000 people would attend the rally.(

Pheu Thai MPs in the Northeast have been taking turns to speak on the stage.

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung was scheduled to appear on the stage at 6pm to explain his reconciliation bill, filed with the House of Representatives yesterday by Pheu Thai MPs."

That would undoubtedly explain the hundreds of armed police and military at the airport on Friday in the early afternoon.

I was at the airport 8 am Friday ,,,,,,,, you would of thought Obama was in town the amount of security , limos and vans , so it turns out twas some reds and government officials heading for the TSM rally .

One of our neighbours went to the rally just for free food, drink and freebies. She told us she did give a stuff about the speeches.

Chalerm is being beheaded this year...

"Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung has vowed to bring ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra home a free man before the New Year.

Addressing a red-shirt rally in Udon Thani on Friday, Mr Chalerm defended his reconciliation bill which he hopes will be instrumental in bringing the deposed premier home.

"If I fail [to bring Thaksin home] I'll accept sole responsibility. You can behead me," he told the gathering."

Well, this is "Red Shirt Country" up here. I expect to see them.

However, with their property destruction antics in the center of Udon, they lost a huge number of their following. A huge number.

I posted a wise remark about beheading, then I thought this just isn't good time for that kind of thing. So I deleted it.

Actually they don't need to go into town anymore. They have a huge site with excellent offices less then three Klms out

What make me scary about the Red shirts:

First they push me in a red village without any question.
But what they do now is really tricky. Everyone have to put a RED shirt in the front of his house.
What happen when you don't do that
Are you then a real target? Like house ready for looting or burn it down.
We will know it when it go political wrong in bangkok.

The red shirts seen hanging in front of houses have nothing to do with politics. They are there to ward off evil spirits supposedly responsible for unexplained deaths amongst thai males, some quite young.The lady spirit is supposedly put off or scared by the colour red.

And there's no need to feel pressured to put out a red shirt. No one's going to burn down your home whether you put out a red shirt or not. It's purely a belief-in-spirits sort of thing.

Very interesting, joudon. I had also taken the red shirt in front of the house as a political statement. Thank you for the insight.

I've certainly seen the "scarecrows" in the past however most all were dressed in cast off clothes of one form or another. In the villages I've cycled through (far too many to count) there may be a few houses with a 'scarecrow" outside but certainly nothing like Phen is describiing. Additionally, this is the first I've heard of the red color (or any other color) warding off the evil woman spirit. Supersition reigns supreme here as well in parts of Malaysia.

I wouldn't be surprised if "red shirt-aligned" villages were the only place you see red spirit shirts hanging. But the shirts themselves and the thai script written on them are non-political.
