Kalasin police have orders to question a provincial chief, shaman and three villagers who allegedly illegally detained and attacked a woman who they believed to be possessed by an "ogre spirit".
Ae (not her real name), 30, filed charges with the police on Saturday against Boonmee Vannarit, chief of South Samran Tambon Administrative Organisation, shaman Paitoon Soommit and three village leaders.
She claimed the five brought her 66-year-old mother, Thong, by force from Udon Thani to be subjected to a superstitious rite to drive out the so-called ogre spirit, which was said to be in possession of the woman.
Ae said she could not ignore the cruelty subjected to her mother, which she claimed had seriously damaged her family's reputation.
Kalasin's Ban Nong Kung Noi villagers contributed Bt50 per family towards the cost of the rite to drive out the spirit believed to be in possession of Thong, which was blamed for the death of several residents.
Thong had been exiled from the village and was living in Udon Thani but the deaths continued so the woman was forced back to face the exorcism.
She was made to drink herbal medicine, restrained in the village's central pavilion and left without food or water for three days.
Ae believes relatives of Thong's new husband made the allegations about her mother because of a land inheritance dispute.
Boonmee yesterday appeared unconcerned about the allegations because the rite was held in accordance with the area's beliefs and they had wanted to drive the spirit out of woman.
"The rite was paid for by all south Samran tambon residents. As the tambon's chief, I had to
do it to solve the problems faced by my people," Boonme said. He said he was willing to meet police officers.
Amnaj Pasuk, of the area's administrative body, said people in the Northeast believed strongly in ogre spirits and the rite to drive the foul presence out of humans had been carried out in the area for centuries.
He was present at the ceremony Thong endured.
Maj Sombat Phankham, of Samchai police, yesterday said people related to the allegations had been called in for questioning, adding the case would be concluded within a week.

Ah, shades of early 1974 and a soon-to-be mother-in-law out of control.. A woman bereft of any sense whose response to any perceived insult was a barrage of vituperous Isaan curses..
So many years ago, but I can still see her 4 foot 10 inch self shaking a fist at the then Thai GF and I and questioning my ancestry until the beginnings of time to the tune of endless Khut Paw Khut Maes.. The neighbors in our slum all coming out not believing the foul mouth of this 63 year old woman... She said, "I'm leaving, I'm going to my family in Roiet, I'm never coming back..." Geeez, and never mind the endless cursing too.. All this over her hitting me up for 200 Baht because she was ever so ill and I wouldn't give it to her..... Ah, and she'd just pulled that same heartstring the day prior and I did give it to her.. Did she go to the Doc?? Nope, bought food for all her friends and had a nice feed under the bungalow.. Thought since it had worked once, it'd work again..
Off she went, getting of course 200 Baht for the bus-fare from me.. to her family in Roiet, half-a-day's ride on the busses back then..
Golden quiet for about a week, and... one day, a very quiet old woman carrying her baskets on a stick walked up to the house.. Eyes downcast, she mumbled, "I'm back..." No explanation.. It was amazing.. A totally changed person.. Subdued, nice to all, well-spoken but very quiet...
Several days after her return, she complained her back hurt.. The then Thai GF said, "let me see" and pulled up her Mom's shirt.. The old woman's back was a mass of black and purple welts.. "Bah khee tor!!! men-yang oi!! what happened??
The old woman, quietly said, "Well, when I got to my family's home in Roiet, they asked me why I came and I told them" (I think probably quite loudly and nastily).. "My brother and sister decided I was possessed by a Pii-Bop (ogre) and that the only way to get rid of it was to beat it out of me." And.. indeed they did!!
Of course, a leopard doesn't change it's spots, at least not permanently. A couple of months of being nice evaporated when once again, she perceived someone as having treated her badly..
Needless to say, she didn't go back to Roiet that time.!!
