Alex, trying to think how people's views were in 1770 through to when the constitution was actually framed in 1787, even then a lot of delegates refused to sign the document.

First of all they apparently wanted Washington to be m0narch, he refused. There were no other Republics to use as a base model, so they started of with a stack of disparate ideals.

There were no trains, Americans travelled up and down the East coast by ship, foot or horsy things. They were under threat from Britain. Snail mail the only form of correspondence. Ball firing muskets the only weapon for personal protection. No police, minimal eduction for many. People still believed in witches and evil spirits.

Voting for government almost unknown in the world and certainly not universal sufferage.

All in all the constitution was not too bad for those times, in fact it was incredibly good for those times, but to claim original intention as an almost religious thought 250 years later is plain nuts.

Those that framed the Australian constition about 110 years later used it as a guide, they extracted the good parts, slimmed it down enormously and dumped the dumb parts. The US voting system was one of the parts dumped.
