Mexico: Claudia Sheinbaum

Post by Laan Yaa Mo » June 8, 2024, 9:20 am

I haven't followed events in Mexico much since Santa Ana's army murdered a childhood hero, Fess Parker (Davey Crockett) and Jim Bowie at the Alamo. The Commanche raids into Mexico and their defeat of Mexican armies in New Mexico and Texas in the 19th century were also noteworthy.

Now Mexico has elected its first female President, Claudia Sheinbaum. Her family escaped from the Nazis in Bulgaria to Mexico. I am not sure if they left Bulgaria during the Second World War or before it began She has experience as an energy scientist and as Mayor of Mexico City.

She has a tough task ahead of her to try and improve the Mexican economy and get the drug cartels under some semblance of control. For example, 38 electoral candidates in the election were murdered, which is horrific. Corruption is also rampart in politics, business, the police and the army.

Congratulations and good luck.

Off topic but related to Mexico,

Mexico is one of those rare countries that allow visa free travel for Thai passport holders.

As we are currently in UK we were thinking of taking a trip to Mexico and looking for thoughts on if it is worth it?

From Manchsester UK it is now easy to get a package holiday to Cancoon. :-k

You might find the temperatures in Mexico starting to get really hot at this time of year, but maybe Cancun will be less sweaty than other parts of the country.

Our data processor lives in Cancun. She says now is not a good time for the beaches in Cancun due to the seasonal seaweed washing up. Later in the year, the beach is cleaner.
