It's not ALL about Britain you know. But if you insist on (yet another) inward-looking, hand-wringing introspective, it did allow the leadership of the UK to be shared with the quite odious DUP and introduced the hapless UK voter to the farcical/fanciful notion of 'confidence & supply'.

Theresa May: Britons will feel renewed pride in 2018

The next 12 months will allow Britons to feel " renewed confidence and pride" as the country makes progress on Brexit and creating a "stronger and fairer" society, Theresa May said in her new year message.
The Prime Minister said that although Brexit was "crucial", it was "not the limit of our ambitions"
After a difficult 12 months which saw her decision to call a snap election backfire spectacularly, three scandal-hit Cabinet ministers forced to resign and continued unrest within Tory ranks over Europe, Mrs May acknowledged that "any year brings its challenges".

In her message, Mrs May said 2017 had been a "year of progress" for the UK and insisted that the divisions of the European Union referendum were in the past as "most people just want the Government to get on and deliver a good Brexit, and that's exactly what we are doing".
In an apparent reference to her own troubles, Mrs May said: "Of course any year brings its challenges - that is true for each of us personally, as much as for our country and the world.
"But the real test is not whether challenges come; it's how you face them.
"Whether you allow a task to overcome you, or tackle it head on with purpose and resolve."
In an upbeat assessment of the coming year, she said: "I believe 2018 can be a year of renewed confidence and pride in our country.
"A year in which we continue to make good progress towards a successful Brexit deal, an economy that's fit for the future, and a stronger and fairer society for everyone.
"And whatever challenges we may face, I know we will overcome them by standing united as one proud union of nations and people."

Theresa May's prediction for 2018 (in Zid's post) was spectacularly astray. She's not good at reading the tea leaves. It's a shame there isn't someone else standing out who looks as if he or she could do much better.

I think the Brits need to be careful they don't catch the American disease where your ideological tribe is more important than in the British case being British. That makes having a well functioning government very difficult.

Brexit party may get more EU election votes than Tories and Labour combined – poll

"Nigel Farage’s Brexit party is on course to secure more support at the European elections than the Tories and Labour combined, according to the latest Opinium poll for the Observer.

In the most striking sign to date of surging support for Farage, the poll suggests more than a third of voters will back him on 23 May. It puts his party on 34% of the vote, with less than a fortnight before the election takes place.

The poll suggests support for the Conservatives has collapsed amid the Brexit uncertainty, with Theresa May’s party on just 11%. Labour is a distant second, on 21%. The Lib Dems perform the best of any of the openly anti-Brexit parties, one point ahead of the Tories on 12% of the vote."

I have been back in Udon now for 2 weeks after almost 2 months in UK.I believe the support for Farage is very strong from what I have read and heard, and certainly not just a protest because there is no credible alternative. Parliament as a whole, including many vile non entities in the House of Lords, have thwarted the result of a fair referendum, and people are getting very angry. If as it is likely, the Brexit party do very well in the EU elections, that is to say that their % of the vote exceeds the combined vote of the remain parties, i.e Lib Dems, Greens, SNP, Change , then it will be the facto 2nd referendum that all the Europhiles have been clamoring for since they were soundly beaten in the referendum in 2016.

You are misreading how angry a huge number of people in the UK are. Farage has launched a new party because the established (establishment) parties have shown over the last 3 years just how out of touch they are with normal people (you know the ones that work, pay taxes etc.) Self indulgent, self serving, public school attending, profession politicians who really don't care about the Country are in for a big wake up call. All of what we call the mainstream parties are now infested by these halfwits.

It will in effect be a protest vote, because both the Conservatives and Labour failed to deliver what the people voted for, - Brexit. So, yes, a very significant proportion of "Leavers" will vote for Farage.

"Remainers" are likely to vote Lib Dem or Green parties. As suggested it will in effect be a de facto second referendum.

The latest polling for the European Parliament elections shows that Nigel Farage's Brexit Party is likely to gain the most seats in the UK, as establishment parties are forecast to lose their majority across the European Union.

The vote takes place in the UK on Thursday 23 May, with the Europe-wide results expected on the evening of Sunday 26 May.

These are expected to see establishment parties across the continent suffer, both at the hands of the populist-Right as well as resurgent liberal parties.

The result is likely to be a more fragmented European Parliament, with the centre-Right EPP and centre-Left S&D forecast to lose their combined majority.

EU MELTDOWN: Brussels issue DAMNING public opinion results ahead of election – 'FED UP'
CITIZENS from across the European Union have issued a damning review on the "meddling" bloc as Brussels braces for the European parliamentary election.

The European Parliament has projected populist and eurosceptic members in Brussels will increase to 14.3 percent from the current 10 percent based upon the expressed within the Eurobarometer survey of surveys.

Factoring Britain’s participation in the May poll, seats eurosceptic parliamentary group Europe of Nations and Freedom (ENF) – which include Marine Le Pen’s National Rally, Italy’s Lega and Poland’s Party of Freedom – would increase from five percent to 8.3 percent.

The other openly eurosceptic bloc, the Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy (EFDD) would win six percent – benefitting France’s The Patriots, Italy’s Movement 5 Stelle (M5S), Poland’s Korwin and Britain's own Brexit Party.

The European Parliament projection appears to echo sentiments within the European Union from certain groups and individuals from Germany, Poland and Italy who spoke to German broadcaster DW on Tuesday May 14.

It would be a tragic farce if somehow the Remainers prevailed, got their second referendum, won their 'resounding' nod to kill Brexit and thus stayed within an EU that is so fractured, it wants to leave itself.

Maybe it is time for British parliamentarians to have a serious look at what is really inside this can that they insist on kicking down the road.

Just as realistic as the possibility for there to be civil war in the USA and the break up of the UK.

the lisbon treaty is lurking down the road and politicians dont mention it much for some reason
