1892 – Norman McAlister Gregg, Australian opthalmologist who discovered that rubella (German measles) in pregnancy could cause birth defects in the child (blindness and deafness) was born.

1907 – The Murrumbidgee Irrigation Scheme commenced in southern New South Wales.

1921 – The Commonwealth Department of Health was formed.

1993 – Two prisoners, Peter Gibb and Archie Butterley, escaped from the Melbourne Remand Centre with the help of prison officer Heather Parker.

1958 – The film ‘Bridge on the River Kwai’ was released in Sydney.

1967 – La Trobe University was officially opened.

1787 – In Portsmouth, England, Lieutenant Ralph Clark began the first of his diaries covering the voyage of the First Fleet and the early years of British settlement.

1837 – The settlement of Melbourne was named. (Note: The "township" was surveyed and named as Melbourne on 3 March 1837.)

1857 – South Australia held its first elections, but an unusually large number of informal votes were submitted.

1870 – Granny Smith, who gave her name to the Granny Smith apple, died.

1909 – Electric trams began operation in Adelaide.

1977 – Queen Elizabeth II arrived in Brisbane.

1979 – The Arbitration Commission awarded Australian women the right to six weeks' compulsory unpaid maternity leave with the option of extending the leave to one year. The provisions, which will flow to all awards covering women in the private sector, took effect on 2 April.

1985 – The National Gallery of Australia purchased the painting L'Après-midi à Naples (An Afternoon in Naples) by Paul Cézanne for A$1 million.

1990 – Bushfires burned in the Adelaide Hills.

2000 – Colonial Stadium, Melbourne's Docklands Stadium, was officially opened, replacing Waverley Park as Victoria's second-largest stadium and headquarters of the Australian Football League.

1788 – French explorer Jean-Francois La Perouse was observed departing Botany Bay, never to be seen again.

1794 – The Reverend Samuel Marsden, who became known colloquially as the 'Flogging Parson', arrived in the New South Wales penal colony.

1874 – Ernest Giles was the first European to explore and later name (12 March) the Petermann Ranges.

1877 – Cloncurry was established.

1908 – Australians Douglas Mawson and Edgeworth David accompanied by Ernest Shackleton and others were the first people to scale Mount Erebus in Antarctica.

1918 – The 1918 Innisfail cyclone made landfall.

1931 – The first Apex Club was formed in Geelong, Victoria.

1946 – An Australian National Airways DC-3 aircraft crashed near Hobart, killing 25 people.

1949 – A Lockheed Model 18 Lodestar crashed near Coolangatta, Queensland, killing all 21 on board.

1959 – The Australian population officially reached 10 million.

1965 – The first draw of the birthday lottery to determine those eligible for National Service training.

1996 – The first Australian Grand Prix to be held at the Albert Park grand prix circuit took place. Damon Hill, of the Williams team wins.

1871 – The springs after which the town Alice Springs was named were found on 11 March 1871 by the team building the Overland Telegraph Line.

1942 – General MacArthur left Corregidor (Bataan) for Australia.

1969 – Police procedural drama series ‘Division 4’ made its debut on the Nine Network.

1981 – Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser informed Parliament that US B-52 bombers would be allowed to land at Darwin from their base at Guam.

1990 – The Queensland Government introduced new heritage laws to protect heritage buildings from demolition by developers.

2001 – The National Museum of Australia opened in Canberra.

ON THIS DAY – 12th March

1799 – Isaac Nichols was accused of stealing stolen goods and sentenced to 14 years on Norfolk Island; his sentence was suspended by Governor Hunter on 1 April.

1830 – The “Warrior” arrived in Fremantle, delivering several families who would later become prominent in Western Australia’s history.

1868 – Henry James O'Farrell fired a revolver into the back of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (second son of Queen Victoria) while the latter is picnicking in the beachfront suburb of Clontarf. It was Australia's first attempted political assassination. O'Farrell first claimed that he was acting under instruction from Melbourne Fenians but later retracted the claims. He had problems with alcoholism and mental illness.

1913 – The Foundation Stone of the Australian capital in Canberra was laid.

1913 – Canberra was officially named by Lady Gertrude Denman, an event celebrated in the Australian Capital Territory on the third Monday in March as Canberra Day.

1921 – Edith Cowan became the first female parliamentarian in Australia, when she is elected to the Western Australian Legislative Council.

1934 – An intense cyclone crossed the Queensland coast near Innisfail, 75 people were confirmed killed.

1936 – Western Australia made voting compulsory in state elections.

1945 – St John the Baptist Church in Reid Canberra was consecrated.

1965 – Swan Hill, Victoria, became a city.

1977 – The Centenary Test commenced between England and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground

1875 – Ernest Giles departed Fowlers Bay on his third expedition to cross the western deserts.

1884 – Daisy Bates married Breaker Morant.

1967 – Bessie Rischbieth, who protested against the Mounts Bay reclamation project on the Swan River and the building of the Narrows Bridge, died.

1972 – Controversial soap opera ‘Number 96’ debuts on Network 0–10.

1977 – The Queen was hit by a flying placard thrown by a protester in Sydney causing grazing to her left shoulder.

1988 – West Australian yachtsman Jon Sanders, completed the first solo triple circumnavigation of the world.

1989 – NSWRL unveiled massive advertising campaign featuring rock legend Tina Turner singing ‘What You Get is What You See’.

1790 – Captain William Bligh arrived back in London a year after the Mutiny on the Bounty, in which he was cast off his own boat.

1831 – The Surprise, the first paddle steamer built in Australia, was launched in Sydney.

1836 – HMS Beagle, carrying Charles Darwin, left Australia.

1863 – Queen Victoria issued Letters Patent granting Goulburn, NSW, city status, making it Australia's first inland city.

1942 – WWII - Japanese forces bombed Horn Island in the Torres Strait.

1978 – Stephen Matthews, aged 20, swept from the Natural Bridge off Albany, by a individual Wave and was rescued by the whale ship, the Cheynes II. It is the first recorded survival of someone swept into the sea at The Gap and Natural Bridge.

1840 – (Paul) Pawel Edmund de Strzelecki climbed and named Mt Kosciuszko, Australia's highest mountain.

1871 – Australia's first synagogue opened in Adelaide, South Australia.

1877 – The first international cricket Test Match on Australian ground began at the Melbourne Cricket ground.

1998 – In their first match, the Melbourne Storm upset the Illawarra Steelers 14–12 at WIN Stadium. The Storm go on to have a remarkable debut season, going within one game of the grand final.

2006 – 18th Commonwealth Games opened in Melbourne, Australia.

1774 – Sea explorer and the first to circumnavigate Australia, Matthew Flinders was born.

1826 – The Australian Subscription Library, the forerunner of the State Library of New South Wales, was founded It opened, 1 December 1827.

1914 – Fourteen people died in a train accident at Exeter, New South Wales.

1949 – Australia's domestic counter-intelligence and security agency, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) was established, by order of the Directive for the Establishment and Maintenance of a Security Service.

1949 – Indigenous Australians who are eligible to vote in state elections in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania were also given the right to vote in federal elections.

1986 – Parramatta Stadium was opened. The Parramatta Eels defeat the St. George Dragons 36-6.

2000 – A nationwide recall of Herron headache tablets was ordered after a Brisbane doctor and his 18–year–old son were hospitalised with strychnine poisoning.

1826 – Bushranger Matthew Brady was captured by John Batman near Launceston.

1830 – Captain Charles Sturt's party reached the junction of the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers on their arduous journey upstream to Sydney.

1853 – St Kilda Road robberies - On 17 March 1853, gold-buyer Edward Ritter and his brother-in-law Samuel Maxwell Alexander were riding in their chaise-cart from St Kilda to Melbourne. A gang of eight or nine men attempted to hold them up near Canvas Town (now South Melbourne - this robbery may not have been on St Kilda Road itself), but Ritter managed to pull away from the potential robbers. A volley of shots were fired, of which three hit Ritter in the legs, without causing any serious injury.

1879 – The Municipality of Canterbury was proclaimed.

1910 – The first unauthenticated controlled flight of a powered aircraft in Australia was made by Frederick Custance, near Adelaide. The flight was witnessed by F H Jones, owner of both the aircraft and the property where the flight took place, but later conflicting accounts by Jones has cast doubt on who flew the aircraft, and whether or not the flight did, in fact, even take place.

1942 – General Douglas MacArthur arrived in Australia to become supreme commander.

1959 – Australia & USSR restored diplomatic relations.

1965 – The Queensland government legislated to ban picketing and restricting pamphlets and banners at the Mount Isa mine. The strikers return to work later in the month.

1967 – Honeysuckle Creek Tracking Station was opened near Canberra.

1834 – Six farm labourers from Tolpuddle, Dorset, England were sentenced to be transported to Australia for forming a trade union.

1876 – Luigi d'Albertis left Australia to explore New Guinea.

1910 – American escapologist, Harry Houdini, made Australia's first officially recorded controlled, powered flight of an aircraft.

1922 – The first section of the Great Ocean Road in Victoria was officially opened.

1962 – WIN Television opened in Wollongong, New South Wales as WIN-4.

1985 – Neighbours premiered on the Seven Network. Six months later Neighbours was axed by HSV-7, but Network Ten bought the rights and picks up the soap and it became a massive hit for them.

2000 – Herron offered a $250,000 reward to try to find out who tampered with its paracetamol products. A 32–year–old Brisbane man was subsequently arrested.

1804 – The settlement at the Hunter River was officially named Newcastle.

1810 – David Collins the inaugural Governor of the Colony of Van Diemen’s Land died in Hobart aged 56.

1827 – Work began on Busby's Bore to pipe water to meet the needs of the growing colony in New South Wales.

1869 – A fatal case of cholera was reported in Sydney.

1885 – Hugh Victor McKay patents the stripper-harvester.

1919 – One of the most notable incidents of the Red Flag Riots occurred in Brisbane, Queensland, when a crowd of returned servicemen clashed with police. The incident had been sparked the previous day by a socialist demonstration against the continued operation of the War Precautions Act, which had angered many of the returned soldiers.

1958 – The Cahill Expressway in Sydney opened. The first true freeway in Australia.

1997 – A conscience vote by the Australian Senate overturned the Northern Territory's controversial voluntary euthanasia legislation, The Rights of the Terminally Ill Act, the first of it's kind in the world.

1997 – Queensland-born actor Geoffrey Rush won "Best Actor" at the 69th Academy Awards for his portrayal of pianist David Helfgott in the movie ‘Shine’. He was the first Australian to win the Best Actor Oscar since Peter Finch in 1976 for the film ‘Network’. Australian cinematographer John Seale wins an Oscar for his work on the film ‘The English Patient’.
