The world spends too much of defense and too little on medical research

In 2018, the total defense expenditure was $1822 billion USD. We spend less than $30 billion on medical research

'There are two obstacles to faster progress, said Dr. Gregory A. Poland, director of the vaccine research group at the Mayo Clinic. “One is scientific, and one is embarrassing,” he said.

The embarrassing part is the lack of investment. It takes 10 years and more than $1 billion to develop a vaccine — a small fortune for a medical advance but a pittance for a weapons system' In an article (NY Times November 2019)

Some virus strains have eluded Scientists by their ability to change, Malaria and AIDS are two examples who shift their structure very rapidly, others like Herpes hide in nerve cells and can not easily be treated with classic approaches.

Makes you think a bit

1. Will COVID 19 be one of those elusive virus strains where it maybe treatable, but not cured?
2. Will COVID 19 finally be the trigger for governments to spend more on research with the realisation that it truly proves the saying that prevention i better than the cure.

I for one would like to see an international fund established to bolster research, link together half a dozen of the world's best research labs with specific funding for finding more cures for virus strains.

Best being part of this forum by placing the intellectual challenged on foes list. A lot less post to read and a great time saver.
