Still significant. However, many weeks to go, I have no doubt that Albo will be our next PM. They say good guys finish last, I hope notmarjamlew wrote: ↑April 17, 2022, 7:28 pmIt's Peter Costello's news paper. How's the 2PP looking?Whistler wrote: ↑April 17, 2022, 7:16 pmHuge swing back to Morrison

you are wrong againWhistler wrote: ↑April 17, 2022, 6:22 pmNo Noosard,
Number 1 was not off target if it was 80 years ago, it was dead accurate, but not for 83 years ago, I already stated that in my previous post.
2019 no Covid in the Western world, 2022 and several millions dead and the world turned on its ear, three years in particular times in history can be highly important. 1939 was not 1942.
Your post was 80 years ago, that was 1942 not 1939.
John Curtin (8 January 1885 – 5 July 1945) served as the 14th Prime Minister of Australia.[4] Labor under Curtin formed a minority government in 1941 after independents crossed the floor, bringing down the Coalition minority United Australia Party-Country Party Coalition government which resulted from the 1940 election. Curtin went on to lead federal Labor to its greatest win with two-thirds of seats in the lower house and over 58 percent of the two-party preferred vote at the 1943 election. Labor won 49 seats to 12 United Australia Party, 7 Country Party, 3 Country National Party (Queensland), 1 Queensland Country Party, 1 Liberal Country Party (Victoria) and 1 Independent in the Australian House of Representatives. The Labor Party also won all 19 of the seats contested for the Australian Senate.[5]
Hope this helps your confusion on how many political parties there were in 1942
But the newspaper story that i posted was 1939 as stated
Re: Australian Election
Sure thing Noosard. Australia in 2022 is a mirror image of 1939, 1940, 1941, 1942 ...et all.
Things like the Great Depression and WW2 never existed, or if they did, had no impact on the nation.

Dont worry the majority of readers would have seen the post was about a newspaper article from 1939, with nothing to do with the war which was 6 to 8 months away.
But the article from 1939 was interesting to read and see the struggles at the time. No food , no money, no chance of work. Would seem to some that the depression never ended. It was also noted in the article that Aussies were being encouraged to have children. But no support by govt.
Many UM posters most likely had no family ties in australia at that period just prior to the outbreak of war and have not had access to family stories and history.
Yes life was difficult I imagine around the world.
As for the producing more kids story my dads parents had 11 and my mums parents also had 11 starting in the late 1920’s. Plenty of struggle street stories in there.
The fact that there was no money or food for the huge amount of unemployed men and families would have made it an easy task for Menzies to have guys sign up and head off to war with 6 bob a week on offer.
As a very young seamstress Mum made parachutes. Dad was very young and was only sent to Cowra for a short period to guard the japs.
Thanks for the article.

According to the Fairfax/Resolve poll voter support for the Labor opposition dropped from 38 to 34 per cent with a rise in the number of undecided voters.
It follows Newspoll suggesting primary support for the ALP has dropped from 41 per cent to 37 per cent in recent weeks. However, Labor retains a 53-47 lead on a two-party preferred basis according to Newspoll.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has suffered his first major campaign gaffe, incorrectly stating the rate of JobSeeker while being quizzed by journalists in Perth.
But on Monday, Mr Morrison incorrectly said JobSeeker’s were paid $46 a week while answering a question on the cost of living.
The actual figure is $46 per day.

I guess that makes it 1-1 in the "who (besides the intellectually and morally bankrupt press) gives a shhiitt about inconsequential statistics" stakes between Albo and Scummo.noosard wrote: ↑April 18, 2022, 12:02 pmPrime Minister Scott Morrison has suffered his first major campaign gaffe, incorrectly stating the rate of JobSeeker while being quizzed by journalists in Perth.

Re: Australian Election
Just shows how out of touch with reality he is I suppose. $46 Aus is about 25 quid so he thinks it should take jobseekers in Australia about 8 months to buy ONE ROLL OF WALLPAPER (840 quid) from where Bojo shops.

I suspect that if $4 out of every $5 the bookies are taking is for one guy, whether they are "in the know" or not their odds are gonna reflect that.
Re: Australian Election
ScoMo and Albo’s thunder has been stolen ahead of the first leader debate by a rag-tag troupe of Australia’s messiest politicians, who went rogue last night in a Gold Coast bar fight.
One Nation’s Pauline Hanson, United Australia kajillionaire Clive Palmer and firebrand federal MP Bob Katter went head-to-head in an uncensored debate on live TV where there was only one goal: to out-crazy each other.

Re: Australian Election
Federal Labor is accusing the government of the "worst failure of Australian foreign policy in the Pacific" in almost 80 years, after the governments of Solomon Islands and China signed a new security pact.
Mr Morrison said his government was "very aware of where the agreement was up to".
He said it was important to communicate with the Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, Manasseh Sogavare, what Australia's position was, and to not "go and stamp around".
He says the aim was to deal with the issue "constructively and respectfully".

Transgender women in sport is a blatant distraction technique by Liberals
Prime Minister Scott Morrison is blatantly distracting from real women’s issues by crowing about an “issue” that really isn’t a problem for women.
