Nong Khai Trip report
I recently visited Nong Khai and took a look around. A compact and relatively quiet town, I have usually enjoyed my stays there.
One of my objectives on this occasion had been to get into 747 Man's swimming pool, but unfortunately he had added an extra later of barbed wire around the perimeter walls, which along with the dobermans roaming the grounds dissuaded me from attempting to get over. I could however see the rows of pink shorts drying on the washing line!!
Nong Khai itself seemed quieter than last time, though plenty of Thai trippers visiting the Tha Sadet market and Vietnamese restaurant as usual. There was the usual small gaggle of bars and restaurants between Brendan & Noi's and the market.
Along the river promenade adjacent to the (Tha Sadej) market, I spotted a couple of what looked like new small bistro/wine bars. And I also discovered a new Aussie owned bar about two thirds of the way down the river road going east.
However, much further down the river road, about 200m-300m before the Temple/Stupa at the far eastern end of the river road, I discovered two new restaurants:-
One run by an English man called Peter, which he has recently re-opened now with the name " Beer Belly Billy's" and which seems to major on English food, and breakfasts of the fattening variety, Thai food, and a wide selection of Home Made Pies.
The other restaurant recently opened, about 100m further on, run by an American New Yorker called Milford, with the name "New York Bistro", seemed to focus on International cuisine, including pizza, some Greek dishes, and when I visited - spare ribs on special offer. Both places offered a selection of local beers.
I also spotted a few coffee shops mainly along the main Prajak Road. One called Nana Cafe, which also serves Thai and Farang food. One in the Esso gas station on the same road - Coffee corner. And one next to the Suksant Hotel which also serves food. Oh and not forgetting Starbucks in the main Tesco complex, if your budget can run to their prices!!
Oh and the Mangoe Karaoke that someone enquired about a few weeks back, seemed to be up and running, with a strictly Thai clientele sat outside drinking.
The Thai Laos Hotel opposite seemed to be where most of the nightlife was - the Riverside pub with live music and the Barnana (?) disco. There was also a new bar area outside in what must have been part of the car park between the hotel and the disco.
I noticed that Tesco complex had added an adjacent small mall comprising mainly of electronic and mobile phone type shops, similar to upstairs in Udon's Charoensri complex.
Anyway I hope that maybe useful to members when they next take a trip to Nong Khai, to renew their visa, or whatever.

Arjay, Well I dont have any Dobermans on guard,So I guess you came to the wrong house/Swimming Pool,However "The Wifes Teddy Bears " Will be patrolling the area tonight,So take EXTRA Care !! They can be really vicious SOMETIMES ,I think they must have inhertited one of the owners " Traits " !!!!.......Are you sure Peter has reopened his restaurant on the River road ?? He disapeared last year,Somebody told me he had gone back to the UK,Maybe a different Peter,Is the man you saw an Elderley Gent,( Around 70 ) from the Lancashire area ( Burnley ) Well somebody has to live there I suppose !!! Let me know I would love to see him again,He made Really great Fish & Chips........Alan...

Yes, 747, it was Peter from Lancashire, about 70, and Da. He had been away for a while and has now come back and opened up in his same place. To reassure you, he seemed to have done every job in his working life. He also has a bungalow somewhere near NK Immigration.

Re: Nong Khai Trip report
Well I went to Pete's & Dar's with My wife last night ( Friday ) and as was the case before he left,Pete's Fish & Chips accompanied by a side salad, filled the plate ,and Also filled my rather large Stomach @ 150 Baht you cannot go wrong,Very Tasty and HIGHLY recommended, had Apple Pie & Ice Cream ( You can have Custard ) If you prefer,This was 50 Baht......Dar also cooks a range of Thai dishes for anyone wishing to go that way......After Dinner had a good chat with Pete ( A Real English Gent ) & NO My next visit is NOT on the house !! :-" :-" And during our chat he gave me some sad news While he was back in the UK,He rented his shop to an Austrailian " Gentleman " And he told me that when He ( Pete )returned the Aussie had gone & So had An Awful lot of Petes Cutlery, Plates,Bowls,Salt & Pepper pots, and EVEN Ashtrays,Music CD's ,DVD's etc etc ... Allegedley STOLEN by this Low Life Aussie SCUMBAG...Just goes to show,IF you have a business to rent out,NEVER Trust ANYBODY,& ALWAYS Take a copy of their passport & Also a rather LARGE Deposit, aswell as the rent for the period.....Pete made the mistake of only taking this Ass*oles rent & trusting him Later on we had a visit from Arjay, who was in the area he popped in for a ( It was good to meet you ********** Ooops Nearly gave you away there,Better stick to Arjay....... :-"
Re: Nong Khai Trip report
A very interesting post and some very nice photo's.
Thanks for the comment on the Mangoe Karaoke, I'd noticed that it had been taken off the market. We still want to move to Nong Khai, but are waiting to sell our bar bar here on Koh Tao first.
