IMHO you don't really need GPS to find Tesco Lotus or Big C, they are all on the ring-road and hard to miss. If you look at the map on this site you will find Tesco is at grid ref J2, Big C is at X18, Homemart & Global House T4, Tool Pro Plus N1 and Home Pro Plus T6. :)

Thanks for the GPS coordinates LA. These could prove to be useful after a night out on the grog, however trying to operate a GPS unit under the influence may prove to be more of a challenge.
I am new to the town, and get lost easily, so its helpful!

I dont know how to get off from the roundabout things! I went around 3 times

It may help to pick up a map when you're in town or download it via this website. All the major supermarkets are on the ring-road and listed on the map so they're really easy to find.

thanks, I do have the map, and downloaded the online map. I bought the GPS specifically for getting around Udon, and for when I plan to make a long trip by tuktuk.

When I was first learning my way around Bangkok,I would jump on various buses, ride all around the city,Great way to learn my way around.Personally,I don't like tuk tuks,to hot and I can't see well enough! Now an aircon van with a driver? That would be my style for a town like Udon!

Hey Fried Rice

Kudjap's not hard to find without a GPS.......Go along the ringroad to Harry's, at the lights take the road that goes away from Udon.....Easy..

But if you need the co-ordinates their 17:12' 11.06 N 102:34' 11.91 E well thats what Google Earth says

Does anyone know if there is good quality mapping software for the new style GPS units. I have one that I left with my Sister because I couldn't get mapping for this area at the time.

apparently one company has the info, without further investment of money or more detailed mapping, but no market, so they don't offer anything to be purchased, but if buying their product, a freebee. not to say one might be bought if asked. i'll see next time in bkk.

some more locations by request, although, Ree said i made a mistake, not sure, didn't think so, but if there is one, shouldn't be major. these are large, well marked and easily located via udon map. actually, if you need the coordinates to find these places, maybe you shouldn't be allowed out unsupervised.

Thanks.

ok, as pointed out, my settings may be off, as tried couple different maps and my bed is in nong bua lamphu on one. so i'm guessing the default settings, though saying asia/thailand aren't exactly correct.

if someone knows what datum thailand uses, it would be greatly appreciated. i have a magellan 310, entry level gps.

change it to deg/min/sec an numbers are getting closer w/default settings. but have to recheck and verify. if anyone knows for sure, please let me know.

datum setting choices are:

default: WGS 84

available choices:
NAD 27
AUST 84
RT 90
KKJ
GRB 36 (guessing UK)

there are other, but obviously not for asia

thanks for any help.

Map Datum = WGS 84
TIme zone = Bangkok
UTC Offset = +07:00
Daylight savings = No

See the "Sat Nav" post regarding a map of Udon I have been working on.

easy enough agreed,i took the 210 route and came back khon kean road route, nice drive too, one thing i did notice was when you go through the small town/village the English signs stop appearing, then the signs are in thai writing on the blue background signs, and if you did'nt have a thai with you might be more harder, but pretty hard to get totally lost all the same.
Plus that's a BIG mountain range to miss.

Did a little research, very little. Checked and verified 3 locations on a map and gps designed for Thailand, and what I confirmed:

DAMN, I'M GOOD

Also know why some disagree with my long/lat numbers for Udon locations. When I originally took readings, my gps unit was set to DEGMIN, which gives you a different reading than DEGMINSEC, which I recently used to verify the location of 3 prominent intersections on the new software, I borrowed, thank you Ray.

So if you set your GPS unit to DEGMIN, the lat/long locations below should be accurate. (apparently others, including google earth default degminsec)

Took the liberty to copy/paste lat/long here, so those interested don't have to look for them.

LA, I'm not a GPS expert by any means, but have been using one for the past 15 years are so. The accuracy of the particular unit depends largely on how accurate the the timing device is. The more accurate units used by surveyors for instance have extremely accurate timing devices thus yielding accuracies of inches/mm. Wether we express the location in degrees and a fraction, or degrees-minutes and fraction, or degrees, minutes and seconds the location is the same point once we do the math. If you put your unit on a table and set it to lay a bread crumb, you will find after an hour or so your unit will have appeared to be walking around a bit, This is due to the limits of the timing device, assuming the unit did not revert to 2D navigation;o)
