Rocket Festival Roi Et 2014 ???

Post by pf-flyer » May 14, 2014, 4:05 am

We had a Bung Fai event that started yesterday afternoon but it was canceled after several rockets were launched when a weather front moved in with wind and cloud to surface lightening. It was canceled not for safety reasons. It was canceled and moved to another day because of the amount of money that was being wagered on some of the rockets and the locals were complaining that the rockets could not be timed very well because of the clouds. There was no regard of the nearby lighting strikes.

Rocket Festival Roi Et 2014 ???

I was going to translate some of the rocket festival mishaps over the past few days.....but seems there's too many to keep track of. Nongkai had one that went off course (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-Oe3fW-EaM), and another huge monster that exploded Columbia-style a hundred or so meters off the launch pad. And my wife tells me there were problems in Amphur Phen with their festival.
Watching the news this morning of the rocket that exploded.....amazing the size of the rocket and the methods used to secure it to the launch pad. Probably not an engineer in sight......spectators within a few 10's of meters of the launch pad. Truly amazing!

We observed rockets being launched while individuals were hanging on the frame getting their rocket ready to launch. It made us cringe at the sight of fire coming out of the rocket very close to the individual hanging on the launching frame.

I reckon the Darwin Awards committee should set up a local chapter in Thailand, to specifically focus on the rocket festivals.

That would blow all of Darwin's theories clean out of the water, or prove ThaiRocketman was walking the paddyfields long before homosapien or homoerectus .... or even HomoEltonJohnus :-"

hey sweetheart, let's go to the rocket festival!! OK,... Drive into the parking lot whoooooooosh BAM!!! dead, toasted... And the crowd runs to the burning car with no thought of the gas tank exploding.. Only when the fire truck had extinguished the fire did someone evidently yell the tank might blow.. Then the crowd pulled back but just for a moment.. The urge to stare at death and get pictures overwhelmed any sense of self-preservation.

Rocket Festival Roi Et 2014 ???

Thailand is a very different culture. I find it very appealing.

I was teaching English at a small school in Udon in 2003. One of the Thai teachers incurred some large gambling debts from the European Cup with the wrong crowd. Sadly he hung himself at home.

There was a photo of his corpse on the front page of a local paper the next day after he'd been cut down and placed on the floor. The newspapers were kept in the teachers room I was in. Throughout the day we had young kids coming in to see the photo in the paper.

Some of these kids would have been 7 or 8 years old. No one batted an eyelid. Back home teachers would probably be arrested for showing pictures of a dead teacher to a kid and the kids would receive tens of thousands of dollars of counselling paid for by taxpayers.

OK, for you football historians I might have the year wrong. It might have been 2002. The teacher was a good guy. He was always very nice to me. I used t have to speak my bad Thai to the teachers at this school but I could speak basic English to the deceased teacher.

Yes, I did. His first message after he died was to be very wary of posters who joined Udonmap in October 2007. He was a cunning fellow. 555

In the video linked below, there's a photo of the damaged truck that was hit in the Amphur Phen rocket incident a few days ago. The rest of the video shows some of the injured being taken to the rescue vehicles.....I didn't see anything that resembled blood/guts.....but I didn't watch the last minute or so of the video.

I think I'll pass on this one parrot. Western countries also still have some mayhem in parts of our culture. Many Americans fondness for guns is one that comes to mind.
