Sabai Sabai Fishing Park - Udon Thani
Hi Paul, just a couple of comments. I've fished your pond several times, always had some success and seldom keep anything. Mostly 'cause I'm too lazy to clean, although the wife usually steps in and "fires" me right off the bat, too slow I guess. I just enjoy catching fish, bigger the better and frankly if there was "wild" fishing I could access easily around that is where I would be. I think everybody enjoys low prices, you have to do what you can and still make money. The only real complaint I have is the damned ants. The last couple of times I was there I swore I would bring ant killer when I came back just for self defense. I'll probably be there in a day or 2.

In response to the many complaints raised by cambsangler I would like to offer the following reply
We have never charged 80 baht for Leo, where you get this price from I have absolutely no Idea, we charge 70 baht which is inline with many other establishments. However I have reduced the price to 55 baht until further notice.
We always provide landing nets as we don’t want fishing being hurt when removed from the water, We only provide keep nets for people taking fish home as keeping fish in a keep net all day is a death sentence and who pays for dead fish yes me! I don’t think I would have tolerated waiting 1-1/2 hours and staff have been told this not acceptable.
Bait is provided at the park for customer’s convenience we also have to purchase from the same shops that you do and add a small mark up to cover costs certainly not 85% as stated. I am currently trying to find a retail supplier who will sell to us at the same price as the tackle shops to allow us to compete on a level playing field. We do not stop customers taking their own bait.Tackle is the price as the tackle shops please do not guess! We are currently running a promotion of 20% off of the food prices, again unless we are being compared to street vendors or the Tesco Lotus food court our prices are not as you stated 100% more than anywhere else.I agree completely that a few of the Huts are in need of repair this work started today to replace rails, bamboo floors and renew all the grass roofs.“Greed” you obviously have never been in business or know the basics of running a business, therefore I would like to enlighten you on this point our electric costs are usually in the region of 12,000 to 15,000 per month this equates to 150 to 200 people per month fishing at 80 baht a time just to cover the electric bill, then you have to add additional costs of wages, new fish, supplies, water, sewage disposal, chemicals etc.The comment about excluding thais this I did find offensive as the vast majority of our customers are thai and seldom complain about prices etc. Quote: She asks a question about fish prices - is told to go and look somewhere, as opposed to giving the information sought (she should know the prices off the top of her head - right?). Your wife asked a 12 year old girl not a member of staff who kindly pointed out one the boards displaying the kinds of fish stocked and the prices which was actually next to your wife.
I believe people should treat people as they expect to be treated manners cost nothing that’s a too way street in my book anyways I cannot compete with local Thai fisheries who grow there own fish open for a few weeks/months then run out of fish and close down again. These fisheries do not stock the size of fish we provide for our customers or the additional facilities such as toilets etc.You seem to have forgot to mention that you paid 120 baht for your days fishing which included 1 kilo of Panine free. Taking off the market price for Panine that means you paid 30 TO 35 baht for a days fishing if that’s to expensive I am completely lost for words. Actually if memory serves me right you actually took Pacu home which is not part of the promotion but our staff allowed you to do.Finally I would humbly request you to read your post again as some of the issued raised were valid and I have addressed but the tone of the e-mail was actually more than just constructive criticism it bordered on offensive. This is not just my interpretation but the many private PMs I have now received from other customers pointing this out. Had it just been my interpretation I would let it go. As you stated in your post I will state in mine that you my not have liked to hear some of my responses but they are the truth. I do hope you visit again and find that action has been taken on the valid parts of your complaints.
KInd Regards Paul

We dont allow food and drink as we have to try and balance the books, however if its the type of snack that you describe and not a full blown meal for 6 then I dont see an issue.
Today we invested in ant spray available at no extra cost to the customer, 2 huts have been reroofed and the middle hut on the west side has a new solid wood floor with more being done tomorrow.
Regards Paul.

People can read what I have said and your response in anyway they like.
Those were my observations based on my eyes and what my wife complained to me about (she is a tight as they come with money) They are a valid opinion and it matters not one jot if no one else on this agrees or disagrees with what I have said. However, it is in your interest to take note of the points raised and discuss, where appropriate how to improve.
I have sent a PM to you as this forum is no longer the place to discuss the issues raised.

Cambsangler - sabai sabai is a fishing park, not a 5 star hotel. The food is remarkably good and the prices are by no means expensive, for the food and drinks. The platforms are a bit rickety, in fact i've seen a thai bloke lean against the hand rail and go straight through it for a good dunking. His reaction ? He laughed. I suspect you and your wife would have had a coronory if it had happened to you. As for the ants, well heaven forbid if a snake had crept into your space when you were busy complaining about everything.
I've taken my family there 100's of times, and could say that this or that wasn't perfect, but for god's sake it's a fishing park. The staff can be a bit slow but so is Thailand if you hadn't noticed.
And most importantly, more than anywhere else in the region, there is a huge selection of fish willing to be caught put back or eaten. Next time you go play on the swings and slide, you may not find fault with that.
OT.................

Personally I have never seen an ant on the park, one of the few places where I have not noticed them!
Should have kept my opinions to myself perhaps and just watch the fishing park sink in to oblivion over a period of a few years? Would have preferred that?
Neither would I, but if Paul does not know what is going on around his own park and in comparrison to other fisheries, that is exactly what could happen. He has already openly admitted he cannot compete with Thai fisheries so needs to do something different. How he does that is up to him but no one man is perfect in every respect and it does no harm to listen to others with a different view. He can then take or leave what he hears, again his choice.
My observations were to help him look at how he could 'potentially' improve the fishery but if all I am going to get is shot down in flames then I will not bother in future.

Hi old-timer, it was me that complained about the ants. It isn't a life or death situation and really not that big a deal, but they can be a pain, especially on the feet if they decide they like you better than the food, or your hand if they have gotten in your bait. I grew up with plenty of critters, including fire ants. I'm pretty much a country boy, swamp rat first, mountains later. No offense there 'ol timer, I've probably got as much if not more experience with snakes than most, we had every poisonous variety in the states where I grew up and when you work/fish/hunt the swamps and marshes you get to know the Cottonmouth especially quite well, not a very nice critter at all.
Thanks for adding the ant killer, did not really mean to sound like it was an earth shattering problem. If possible, I'll be out for a bit this week.

The ant spray is an earth mover one of the bugs bit me!! then again don't know who was more shocked the ant or me as I just bit him back but not everyone is scottish so hence the investment in the spray. Work continues today on replacing the bamboo flooring and new roofs. Last week we added a lot of new fish including Platong guy which are great fighting fish with teeth and lots of spots down there back.

Lee,
Heading to Nong khai turn left at the noodle shop easily reconised by the wagon wheels built into the wall, if you reach the Esso Garage you have overshot the road to turn left by 50 mtrs. There is also a sign for the Christian School we are on the same road as them.

getting live bait at tackle shops is an issue, 50% of the time they don't have any in stock. Some fishing lakes can provide them but it is not usually a stocked item. Worms are seasonal but can be bred in a wormery for dry season use. The main problem there is not enough demand to make commercial supply a profitable business. If anyone wants to pay for it, i could probably arrange supply of live worms and shrimps but transport costs are the main issue. i did research this a bit; if demand is sufficient supply will follow!

I don't know if the fish in the fishing parks like crickets, but my catfish sure do. I buy 30 baht or so every other week from the weekly market (ตลาดนัด). I keep them in an old garbage can with several of the pressed cardboard egg trays. Add a slice of old melon or old fruit and the crickets easily survive two weeks. I use them when I want to pluck out a few catfish for lunch or feed them to the visiting white-rump shama birds in our yard.
I'd guess other fish would like them as well. If nothing else, you could have the cook fry them up for the Thai customers to munch on.
