like every year , i will give myself ( and my wife )a 10 day home arrest , more crazy (drunk) drivers as usual on the road , anyway songkran is supposed to be a buddhist event , but the real purpose has long time been gone , and a more moneymaking version has replaced it... ;)

Shame but have to agree ,,, the real meaning of Songkhran has been for the best part lost ,,,, imo for most Thais especially the young /teens etc its just an excuse for a piss n punch up .... only really the older generation Thai know and respect its real traditions and values ......mash prefers to just stay on the fringe away from it all .

Is it the thai's that are usually having punch ups ?

I was in Udon for Songkran 3 years ago and never saw any trouble, i quite enjoyed it but felt it maybe went on a little to long but in general seemed like harmless fun to me, but maybe i was in a good area, away from the trouble ?

Some of the posts from last year regarding pissed up farangs and fights makes me wonder if they weren't thinking about the 10-day mayhem that is Songkran in Pattaya. The last Udon Songkran I did was also about 3 years ago; the year they had the water shortages so less stand-pipes set up by the city management and although I thought it was good fun (driving the pickup and mostly dry), the family reckoned it wasn't as good due to the lack of water. I recall driving longer distances with the drums and buckets empty while the passengers got soaked without their own 'ammunition'. The best one I recall was in Vientiane about 5 or 6 years ago. More low key and daylight only but maybe that has changed with the growing expat population.

Only one day this year for me,feel a tad guilty that Udon Thani is mentioned as a drought province, not want to waste water :^o Will the local government turn off the taps and then can have a dry old party for a few days. :-k
Hope any farang out on the back of pickups are fully oiled up for the strong rays, red knees and redface will be too evident otherwise [-X
If not interested in water throwing, then there is a wife carrying race going on,all welcome, extra points given if she weighs more than you, scales will be supplied beforehand =D>
