Dragon Boat Racing and Fair; Khumpawapi

Post by FrazeeDK » November 4, 2012, 8:40 am

Today, Sunday has another day of dragon boat racing in Khumpawapi town 45 km south (Rte 2) and then east. This annual event has been going on for years. Yesterday had more than 30 boats (30-50 rowers each) competing. Plenty of space to sit on the river bank (bring a bamboo mat!!). The Monkey park in the center of town has a fair/carnival. There are several Maw-Lam bands playing around town too. Recommend getting there later in the morning, parking behind the monkey park and walking 5 minutes down to the river. Many food and knick-knack stalls all over town...

The longboat racing was fun to watch like every year.

However, there is one thing I don't understand. This is one of the main annual events in Kumphawapi, when there are many visitors. A good opportunity for the restaurant bussiness to earn money and attract new customers. So, I was very surprised that both Farang restaurants in Kumphawapi were closed.

Sorry this was not announced earlier, say one week or one month before the event>
We had nothing planned last Sunday.

My wife caught it on the Udon Home Cable channel that announces local events.. Yah, I shoulda posted it Friday when she noted it but I wasn't 100% sure that the news was accurate..
