Childrens Day 2010

Tomorrow 9th January is the day dedicated to the youngsters in Thailand. Many government institutions are open for this day once a year to amuse and enlighten the kids. Too many to list but my favourites are naturally the Thai Royal Air Force base who will have a static display of weaponry and a flying display, both fixed wing and helicopters .There is also many other entertainments laid on including motorised parachuting displays .The next I always enjoy is the police dog handlers display at the canine training center on the Sakhon Nakhon road straight over the Big C flyover a few k's on the left .Most public venues are free entry and many private companies are offering reduced rates to kids. So whatever you decide to do, have a great day out with the family .

Ageing is a privilige denied to many .

Childrens day 2014

There is a very nice 4 minute video posted on Youtube dated November 2014 of this event.

What is the best time to get there to get reasonable parking and where do you suggest entering for close parking? I know that you may be able to enter from the west airport side of the base or from the east, main entrance of the airbase.

Thanks for posting about this event. Looks like it will be a lot of fun.

There's a 'kids discovery' event in the 4th floor conference hall of Central Plaza 9-11 Jan

Major Group cinemas are offering free movies and snacks for kids on 10-11 Jan

Udon Air Base has a full day's worth of events on tap.......9AM-4:30PM......dog shows, F5/F16 and Harrier (I think) displays and air show, free snacks and photo opportunities for the kids
http://www.kpjhospital.com/index.php?op ... Itemid=160

Be aware.....traffic is typically backed up all day along Taharn Rd, the statue circle, Srisuk Rd from the statue circle to Makkaeng, and around Central Plaza.

I'll post more info if I come across it in the local websites.

A good day to stay away from downtown unless you have kids. Might be a good day to check things out at Udon Tap. Jon's always known to put on a show.

A good alternative is to pay a visit to one of the local orphanages.
Last few years have visited the girls orphanage about 20 minutes south of the ring road, heading to KK.
They put on a nice show and food, of course grateful of any donations received.

unlikely the Air Base will have a "Harrier" on display unless it is static.. The 8 AV-8A's the Thais had were out of service years ago.. More likely a couple of the new Swedish "Gripen" fighters the Thais purchased two years ago will be there.. They were doing afterburner low-levels flights around the air base all week...

Its also a day NOT to fly from Udon, as kids and adults all over the tarmac, luggage trolleys etc and easy to have things placed on a flight that shouldn't be there.

Yes, I did that in about 2004. I still remember seeing the girls and the day we made that visit. Some kids have a really tough start to life. If I'm ever in Thailand on Children's Day I'd like to make this visit again.

I like the idea of Children's Day. We don't have it in New Zealand.
