Chinese New Year

I saw an earlier post regarding the Chinese New Year in Udon Thani and was wondering whether anyone knew anything about scheduled activities for this year, or where I could get the information.

Looks like the city will set up Prajak Rd.....from the clock circle to Tungsrimeaung.......food vendors, dragon dances, fireworks, Potato, The Star, and Jeseter will perform....from 18 to 20 Feb.
Last year we were there early on the first night. City officials were paraded in from the clock circle with a dragon dance and boatloads of fireworks.
Lots of people having a good time and plenty of food vendors to choose from.....including a sampling of many bigger restaurants around town.

Oh, really now.......about the only thing open at 6AM in Udon is คิงส์โอชา, individual's Ocha....the famous kai gra tha joint......on Srisattha Rd (ถนนสี่ศรัทธา). And they're usually packed at 6AM. The Chinese New Year fair is due to open in the evening.

All that said......I only report what I find in the Thai press/websites or hear from a variety of Thais I know around town. As with anything dealing with 'time' in Thailand, their concept (east) and ours (west) aren't always in the same time zone.

Some have a problem with am and pm. Saw a sign in a shop window the other day "open 0800 PM"

1 -24 much easier , At the other end some countries still cling to pounds and shillings, o'Kelvin, stones, miles , ounzes and a lot more.
Personally i don't have any problems with am and pm.... ;)

Although Chinese New Year is pretty much behind us, Andrew Biggs weighs in with some interesting insight in Thai/Chinese culture
http://www.bangkokpost.com/lifestyle/so ... rom-within

Finally......it's interesting that so many people talk about Chinese New Year in Thailand......but can't ever say I've heard anyone talk about Vietnamese New Year.....even though there are a good many Vietnamese in town. I wonder if the larger Vietnamese communities, say in a place like Nakon Phanom, have more sway in monopolizing "Vietnamese New Year"

I believe they had two stages, one Chinese and one Vietnamese.
