Not Udon Thani but, near.
I went to Wat Thung Setthi yesterday which is near the ring road to the South of Khon Kaen.
Can certainly recommend a visit. The Wat itself is new and impressive. The grounds are beautifully maintained and house, amongst other things, statues etc depicting Heaven and Hell which are unusual and worth a look.

I totally endorse your analysis. This is an impressive wat just outside Khon Kaen that I have visited on numerous occasions. Wat Nong Waen inside Khon Kaen is another impressive Wat. But, you had better be prepared for some serious climbing in the latter wat.
You only pass through this life once, you don't come back for an encore.
