Taxi's here are a lot more expensive than Bangkok, so would likely cost you around 1,200 - 1,500 Baht.
Buses run from Central Bus station regularly and would cost around 150 Baht depending on which bus company you choose. These are approximate costs.

If I remember correctly, the orange buses that run between Udon and Khon Kaen are about 25-30 baht one-way, and take you to the older bus station, which is about a 10-minute walk from the new station. But it is near the Roma, Khon Kaen and other hotels.

Yes, that's the one.
I would avoid the orange 'Death trap' buses (40 Baht, not 25 - 30) they are the ones you usually see parked on their side in the central reservation (median strip for Americans) Go for a VIP bus... it's worth the extra

Hi,
Yes i would go for the VIP bus, as Stevo said. Don't know the cost to K.K., but when i went to BKK it was 405B., one way, Reclineing massage seats and a meal and bottle of water in price. Not bad for a 6 hour trip. You have to book early to get on them, as they were always full when i took them. Their office is on the main road just outside the bus station in Udon.
