I've heard that satellite is not very reliable, cuts out when it rains etc. One guy told me it used to cut out everytime a cloud went over!
Don't take my word for it though, I've got a vested interest in GPRS and EDGE.
Anyone considering satellite should contact others who already have the service, or have used it in the past. Forewarned is forearmed, as they say......

TTand T
You should, if you have not yet, check out if TTand T have lines available where you are. They cover areas that TOT do not. And if so, they can give you an ADSL package for 550 per month, all equipment free on a current promo.pinophai wrote:Yes, but we don't have a telephone line because we live outside a small village in the Phen district. We have to look for a alternative.arjay wrote:Sounds expensive to me too, certainly compared to ADSL.
What is the price from gprs? And is it good and fast?
Two friends of mine have it. One pays 1500 per month, the other 550 per month. The only difference is the package name. The cheap one is Cmac. Exactly the same as the other. Friend One is now very angry.
Good luck!
Trying to get things done!

Sounds good but not without telephone line. I am looking for somebody whom has this Ji-Net sat installed?johnt wrote:You should, if you have not yet, check out if TTand T have lines available where you are. They cover areas that TOT do not. Is Edge Thailand speaking for his own shop?
He does actually mention that he has a vested interest in GPRS and he does have an online shop.Is Edge Thailand speaking for his own shop?
I personally like GPRS, I use it 6-8 hours per day without problems. The speed is 115 kpbs and with the software from onspeed.com it speeds my connection up 4x making it almost as fast as ADSL. I do however get problems in the evening but I think this is due to heavy mobile usage, it doesn't really bother me because I use it through the day; I'm usually at the pub in the evenings of crashed infront of the TV with a cold beer.
Good luck with Ji-Net. Maybe you can ask for a test drive before you shell out the money for the service.
I just found out about the gprs package from True Move. 799 Baht for free telephone (6 to 6) and unlimited gprs internet 256k. Sounds good.lee wrote:He does actually mention that he has a vested interest in GPRS and he does have an online shop.Is Edge Thailand speaking for his own shop?

i used to have ipstar satilite internet service, with the exception of price, no complaints. speed was as advertised, 256/128, only a couple interruptions of service over couple years, so much better than phone service, from what i gather from the complaints. but 3200 baht a month and 10000 baht installation is a bit steep. not sure if price has changed since then, that was the express 1 service contract, 750 mg per month, which is hard to use up, unless downloading music/videos/pics. i had a couple streaming information pages open at a time for 4- 8 hrs a day and rarely went over.
I am also an iPSTAR customer, but i cannot say that this solution is reliable, especially during rainy season. Alas, it seems that I don't have many other ways to access Internet, as in my very isolated village, I can not have a fixed phone line and even the mobile phone does not work at times as the signal is too low (and the mobile phone has to be located in a certain place in my house for I can be called).laphanphon wrote:i used to have ipstar satilite internet service, with the exception of price, no complaints. speed was as advertised, 256/128, only a couple interruptions of service over couple years, so much better than phone service, from what i gather from the complaints. but 3200 baht a month and 10000 baht installation is a bit steep. not sure if price has changed since then, that was the express 1 service contract, 750 mg per month, which is hard to use up, unless downloading music/videos/pics. i had a couple streaming information pages open at a time for 4- 8 hrs a day and rarely went over.
Well, the price is now 2500 baht + 7% tax by month and the traffic is (in theory
I would not be too optimistic if I were you about the speed with this service, especially during the rainy season. My last checks since mid-april this year displayed a connection speed (when connected, because I am not always able to establish the connection at times, if it's heavy raining here or near their own gateway in Bangkok) varying (for downloads) from 22kbps to 110kbps (and between 60 to 85kbps most of the time) as its best. In theory, it is a 256 (download) / 128 (upload) Kbps connection. No virus, no adware, no spyware, no malware on my computer...
Don't forget it: it is the maximum speed that they advertise, not a minimum nor a guaranteed speed...
