I've just been offered this Windows Update on my desk top PC, which I use slightly less often. Could this be a clue to SOME of the problems I've been encountering?
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/securi ... 24375.mspx
I note that login live is mentioned, along with addons mozilla and Skype?
If so, the question then is does installing this update create or solve those particular problems??
Judging by the fact that I have installed it on my Vista based laptop (on 26th March), where I am having those access problems, but I haven't yet installed it on my desktop where I am still able to access hotmail/login live, it would seem to suggest that the installation of that Windows Update causes the problem, - bar stewards.

Arjay,

iff i remember, You have delete them on your other computer and the problem you have still exist.
Have you folow already my sugestion on the other treat?

Look fore WinAmp, Foxclocks, mozilla or firefox, live.com, OR anny other program you are using that don't work properly, In the Eset "Protocol Filtering Application"
It looks me more that your Eset AV have blocked the CCL Certificates from the excluded list,
Frans.

OK, here it is then:
After confirming that I could access hotmail through Opera and IE, but not through Firefox.
And after establishing/confirming that I could not download updates (from the likes of Filehippo, CCleaner, Skype, WinAmp etc) through any of my Browsers, but I could if I turned off the Firewall and AV programmes.
So ....I first downloaded a new version of ESET AV programme and also Firefox 4, whilst the Firewall and AV were disabled.
Then I uninstalled Firefox 4.0, and as advised by Frans (thank you), I uninstalled the ESET Security Suite (a bit of a long winded procedure), and then re-installed a new version. Then re-installed Firefox 4.0.
The Outcome:
I then found I could access my Hotmail in Firefox again (and as my Homepage) as well as in Opera and IE. AND that I could download updates from Filehippo, CCleaner, Skype, WinAmp and even WinZip, (and "Uncle Tom Cobbly and All") in ALL browsers ... "without let or hindrance" - as the saying goes. So it must have been something to do with my Firewall/AV programme (ESET).
The only slip up I seem to have made is that the ESET I that I installed didn't include the Firewall. I thinkI'll make do with the Windows one, rather than mess around trying to get back to the full ESET Security Suite (unless anyone knows of any easy way to add after - without uninstalling again)
I'll now have to look what the situation is on the desktop.
Thanks everyone for your help and time, particularly Bob and most particularly Frans. =D>

Hello Arjay,
You are welcome, but not every day i hope :-"
Happy your problem is solved.
But IFF you had read the other post before this one as i mention here underneat,
viewtopic.php?p=257019#p257019
Then you had know it is not neccesary to delete. Everything have to do with your Protocol Filtering Exluded Application in Eset AV.
Frans.

Arjay,
I just try to learn ...
You have wrote in your other post: "However, I then went into the Protocol Filtering Excluded Applications where there was a long list (all unchecked), / """ and checked (ticked) WinAmp which it then allowed me to download """ \. However I didn't get any Exception Messages, so after reverting the SSL filtering mode settings option back to "Always scan SSL protocol", I am of course back to square one".
So this is the reason i send you folowing:
Beware I don't use Eset, But i think you point it out with the WinAmp!
4.1.6.1 SSL
ESET NOD32 Antivirus enables you to check protocols encapsulated in SSL protocol. You can use various scanning modes for SSL protected communications using trusted certificates, unknown certificates, or certificates that are excluded from SSL‑protected communication checking.
Always scan SSL protocol – Select this option to scan all SSL protected communications except communications protected by certificates excluded from checking. If a new communication using an unknown, signed certificate is established, you will not be notified about the fact and the communication will automatically be filtered. When you access a server with an untrusted certificate that is marked as trusted (it is added to the trusted certificates list), communication to the server is allowed and the content of the communication channel is filtered.
Ask about non‑visited sites (exclusions can be set) ‑ If you enter a new SSL protected site (with an unknown certificate), an action selection dialog is displayed. This mode enables you to create a list of SSL certificates that will be excluded from scanning.
Do not scan SSL protocol ‑ If selected, the program will not scan communications over SSL.
If the certificate cannot be verified using the Trusted Root Certification Authorities store (protocol filtering > SSL > Certificates):
Ask about certification validity – Prompts you to select an action to take.
Block communication that uses the certificate – Terminates connection to the site that uses the certificate.
If the certificate is invalid or corrupt (protocol filtering > SSL > Certificates):
Ask about certificate validity – Prompts you to select an action to take.
Block communication that uses the certificate – Terminates connection to the site that uses the certificate.
4.1.6.1.1 Trusted certificates
In addition to the integrated Trusted Root Certification Authorities store, where ESET NOD32 Antivirus stores trusted certificates, you can create a custom list of trusted certificates that can be viewed in Advanced Setup (F5) > Protocol filtering > SSL > Certificates >Trusted certificates.
4.1.6.1.2 Excluded certificates
The Excluded certificates section contains certificates that are considered to be safe. The program will not check the content.
I,m happy to know the above dit'n work

When you are in the "Protocol Filtering Exluded Application" And tick WinAmp again (Or anny other programme that don't work properly yet), Is there no possibility to click on "aply or safe or OK"? or just close the folder afther tick the WinAmp, And Excluded it from being scanned? 4.1.6.1.1 and 4.1.6.1.2 beneath!

Frans, I'm still working on it.
I think that on my desktop PC it was a Firewall conflict! I have a NVIDIA Firewall (hardware) already on my PC, and I installed the ESET Suite which included a Firewall. Since then I have been p**ing around uninstalling the ESET Smart Suite and installing in it's place the ESET AV programme (without Firewall).
NIVIDIA kindly told me of the conflict and that it had taken the necessary steps to resolve it and I think Firefox got caught in the middle!!
So having done the above I then have had to p*** about further adding an exception rule to NVIDIA's Firewall and also to ESET SSL filtering because I hadn't had Firefox installed when ESET was installed it wasn't on ESET's exceptions list with Opera, and it was being denied by NIVIDIA too.
I think I am about there, but as it's nearly midnight here and I've been staring at computers for the last 4 days or more, and I can't see straight, I'll give you the final outcome/verdict tomorrow. ... but note this is coming via Firefox!!

Hi Arjay
glad to see it seems your comp is running OK--the uninstalling and reinstalling of FF as written is quite correct, however if like me you want to also transfer all your passwords at the same time---Then
Your passwords are stored in two different files, both of which are required:
* key3.db - This file stores your key database for your passwords. To transfer saved passwords, you must copy this file along with the following file.
3.5/3.6:
* signons.sqlite - Saved passwords.
3.0:
* signons3.txt - Saved passwords
If you just copy those from you old FF and over write them in your new one then your passwords will also be reinstalled.
They wil of course be found in----- C:\Documents and Settings\YOURNAME\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\blrs1la0.default
Passwords
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are moving around from Laptop to Home PC You might find this program handy, if not the suite then some of the other portables you can pop on your flash drive. I use a portable Firefox which has all the bookmarks I want kept private and it also saves me having to ditch History on the main Firefox. Of course you can't run them together. It is also handy to have the bigger programs like Office, Photoshop and an email client as portables.

Good Afternoon Frans.
After telling the system to accept the "not trusted" sites, I don't get any messages or problems the next time.
Yes, I managed to copy my Firefox bookmarks across to "My Documents", so have them backed up just in case. I'm fine tuning my tabs today.
I've also put a new battery in my PC to see if that will solve the boot up problems I've been having on it. It "loads defaults" upon booting up, and I have to press F1 to proceed. Then I've been having to reset the date and time (every time I use the PC). - It causes the AV programme expiry date some confusion, as it starts with the 1st Feb 2005 each time. So I hope the new battery will solve that. If not, it maybe a new hard drive and a new installation of Windows 7 and everything else all over again. The mouse/screen has been freezing up sometimes, which reminds me of a damage to hard drive problem I had a long time ago. So I'll turn off for a while and then back on again. I'm hoping the battery will solve all ills! [-o<

Hello Arjay,
The "non trusted site" are a normal firewall behaviour, problem solved
The link I send you to "shange" bookmarks and passwords between computers have a Dual purpose. You can reach everything, From whatever computer or country where you reside, So long you use Firefox, And have or install(ed) this little programm on the computer in front of you, By the unique Firefox Sync Key. This bookmarks and passwords are safely keeped on the servers from Firefox. Just in case you travel around and your laptop go's to heaven Or losing memo stick where you keep the back-up.

As I understoot from your other post, You are using Vista on the laptop and XP on your desktop, Have you switch operating system in the meantime to Windows 7, On your computer?
This could give some of the problems you describe by not properly working memory&proccesor or hardware.
That's why I send you the link before, To scan your computer (Before installation of Window7) to see iff your system is OK fore Windows 7

Iff the new problem you describe in your last post is not solved (and I believe this) by replacing the batery. You could think about the option to "REPAIR!!!" your operating system. But only repair!, This wil keep all your other progammes and sethings.
To do this you need a instalation DVD and key number. (Incase your XP is not **** you cane tick the option to not registrate during operation )
How to repair XP: (Scroll down till you see "How to Repair Install")
