Bit Defender Message

Post by Brian Davis » October 20, 2015, 6:51 am

Had a few problems with my computer recently, refusing to boot up. F8 and check disk have got it going again, but we'll see. Today, booted ok, if a bit slowly, but couldn't access Google etc.for a while - that. I think, perhaps explained by internet connection issues, although I did have all the lights!

But my real query. As the computer closed down today, a message appeared very briefly. But I'm sure it mentioned Bit Defender and blocking. A little research and I understand Bit Defender is a separate anti-virus program, which I didn't think was installed on my computer.

Anyone offer why this message should appear?

Bit Defender Message

I'm wary of Bit Defender, but possibly irrationally. A number of years ago my computer was infected by a virus which called itself Bit Defender and required a payment in exchange for disabling itself. It took Geek Squad half a day to remove it for me. At that time, I installed Kaspersky, which GS identified as the only anti-virus at the time which successfully defended against this particular virus. I've been with Kaspersky since then for all of my computers with no further virus problems at all.

I have been running the paid for Bit Defender anti virus software for the last couple of years & am very happy with it.

I believe that your problems are probably hard disk created & that you need to copy any vital information that you have on that disk as soon as possible.

I would also suggest that you download Seagate Tools for DOS from here
http://www.seagate.com/as/en/support/do ... os-master/
& run it.

I would also download Malwarebytes from here
https://www.malwarebytes.org/
(the free version) & run that, just in case it is actually malware rather than hardware problems..

Brian, having thought about it, I don't think that it mentioned Bit Defender, the virus scanner I think that it probably mentioned Bit Locker.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitLocker

That is further evidence, I think, that you have a very fragile hard disk on your PC at the moment.
Time to try & repair (with Seagate Tools) & if that does not work probably time for a new hard disk!!

Seagate drives are really poor these days and have a much higher failure rate compared to their competitors. The failure rate on their 3TB drive is horrendous. http://www.extremetech.com/computing/19 ... -data-good

Bit Defender Message

Post by Brian Davis » October 24, 2015, 2:12 pm

Thanks for the replies.
It’s just as well I don’t live in a high-up condo, or somebody might have suffered a computer to the head! But I guess we all feel like this on occasions.
You may be correct about Bit Locker rather than Bit Defender, Bob, although I certainly thought the latter as it whizzed by. I do have Malwarebytes and running it again indicated no problems. I haven’t got around to your Seagate suggestion yet and, if I understand the need to burn a CD, there MIGHT be a problem in that my DVD drive is playing, but not recording. At least that’s the way with trying to burn some music from Media Player(“Not responding” is what I’m getting), but I’ve seen there’s quite a bit of information about trying to correct this.
The good news is that the computer is working, fingers crossed. There seems quite a few ways of checking/repairing the hard drive. I requested a scan (files, sectors) at my next logon. To be honest, I’m not sure if something happened or not! For ages, I have just a blue monitor screen and both actual computer lights remained full on. No obvious running noises from the box. Then suddenly, the system booted up as normal. Perhaps this is the norm when checking a hard disk, in that it’s being evaluated before ‘loading’ as it were?
Incidentally, my hard drive is just reaching 2 years old. IF I end up buying new and re-installing a GENUINE Windows 7 (yes, I appreciate Windows 10 is sitting there waiting to be installed), am I likely to get queries from Microsoft OR is it ok if I’m using the same I.P. address?
Other problems?
I run CCleaner regularly, but in checking ‘Registry’ 300 problems showed, which must have happened in a short space of time.
In the thought it might help, I tried to ‘restore’ to an earlier date. Got a message that it hadn’t run because of a missing file.
I had a suspicion that Facebook Fluff-Busting might be causing problems. Perhaps I’m mistaken, but thought this ‘extension’? disappeared on its’ own, but then came back again. Anyway, removed properly now, but all the junk is back on Facebook.
And perhaps others have a view on this. I tend to be an early to bed/early to get up person, except if MY football’s on and with the ‘help’ of the dogs. It should be a good time to get a few things done on the computer (young son still asleep) BUT my internet connection has been very unreliable say between the hours of 0400 – 0600. After 0600 hrs, everything seems fine. Is there a world overload then, are TOT, somebody carrying out server maintenance etc? I got nowhere in a ‘phone call to TOT asking if something was happening at those normally quiet hours. Ideas? Perhaps I should adjust my sleeping arrangements.

Yes you need to download & burn Seagate for DOS to a CD - or boot enabled to a USB, if you have something like Rufus
https://rufus.akeo.ie/
to do that.
It you have the PC enabled to boot from CD/USB it will then launch itself when you start up the computer.
You need to get it to check the disk & repair, rather than just check the disk - it takes no longer to do that, but the program takes a while to run & if it finds errors that you want to repair then it takes as long again to do the repair..

It sounds like it was a hard disk issue & so worth running the Seagate program even if a pain.. :D

Need not worry about reloading Windows 7 on a new hard disk. As long as you have the amazingly long 'product key' to be put in when requested then Microsoft will be fine...

Personally I have not noticed a time related issue with the Internet of late, certainly not early am. When I was on the 5GB scheme with 3BB I did use to notice a dip about 4pm in the afternoon, which I put down to kids exiting school & entering Internet cafes!! :D
