Laptop problem
Laptop problem
My Dell N4010 laptop has been running Mint 19.1 OK for some time, but it has just refused to boot up after a restart following trying to read a dud USB stick. The Mint logo comes up but then just small light flashes top LH corner. I've put in a new CMOS battery (old one tested OK) but to no avail. Is there a simple DIY fix or do I need some expert help? Can anyone recommend a fix shop in Udon? Thanks.
Re: Laptop problem
You can try Dr Computer, just across the street when exiting Central from the main entrance. FRom Central cross the street, go right, pass the new gold shop and Dr Computer is about 60 m. He is very good with hardware, speak very little english. Good luck.

Re: Laptop problem
I have done what vlad is suggesting with my old Acer on a couple of occasions and it worked for me so might be worth a try.
The forest was shrinking daily but the trees kept voting for the axe as its handle was made of wood and they thought it was one of them.
Re: Laptop problem
Thanks for the replies, I ended up opting for a replacement 250gb ssd and latest Mint, all better than before. But lost all my stuff on the old 320gb hdd, is there any way to retrieve it? Thanks again.
Re: Laptop problem
Old hard drive could be used a second hard drive inside your laptop
Be only used as storage but can still access old files

Re: Laptop problem
Buy an external HDD enclosure with USB interface, abt 400 Baht, install your old HDD into it then just plug it into your NoteBook. If it's readable you will see the drive appear in your Explorer window eg. xxxxx (E:), hopefully you can open it and go shopping for your files.

This is what Dero is talking about:

If your lappy won't read the the old HDD once connected, you will need to google for specialist recovery software, and if that doesn't work, enquire at a few of the IT shops in Udon. Make sure you plug the enclosure in after you have booted your lappy.

Re: Laptop problem
The large rectangular unit is a power supply which connects via the plug/iec socket on the right to a power outlet.
The other end of the power supply has a 4 pin plug which suits the old ide drives OR by using the lead with the white socket, power can be plugged into the later model sata drives via the black end as the 5v and 12v supply.
The remaining usb plug is to connect to a pc, and it's opposite end again, is to suit the old ide drives, OR by using the red lead it is adaptable to the new sata drive data out.
Clear as mud...?????
Where they are useful is if a primary drive stuffs up due to some sectors being corrupted or damaged, normally the operating system is affected so nothing will show.
Using this, if the drive is still functional, it is in many instances possible to still access certain files such as photos and the like by plugging this into a working pc and the dodgy drive will come up like any other aux or usb drive or memory stick.
