Note I have ESET AV & Firewall etc, NOT AVG.
My laptop bought in the UK is newer and has a genuine copy of Vista, whereas my desktop which is much older was bought in Udon and has XP. I am therefore loathe to replace my newer and genuine stuff, though will no doubt have to do it before too long.
I have now got the updates installed having downloaded them on my desktop and transferred them via Memory stick to my laptop..
Problems downloading software updates
Re: Firefox
Hello Arjay.
The Windows update's you mention have to do with a SSl attack from ... Nothing with downloads. (Maybe some SSL certificates are blocked by your AV Suite?).
"The Update XML file malformed (200 ...) error messages may occur after an attempt to update *???*. You must exclude the *???* so SSL protocol checking functionality will not interfere with the process. (*???* means programmes&web-sites that don't work properly !)" Per example your FoxClocks, CCleaner, FileHipo, Etcetera.
! Do the folowing step's&proceeds 1 by 1 "fore every problem" you have with programmes or updates "Seperated", And folow instructions iff you have to restart your computer between !
1. Open the main program window by clicking the ESET icon next to the system clock or by clicking Start > All Programs > ESET > ESET Smart Security.
2. Press the F5 button on your keyboard to open the Advanced Setup window.
3. Navigate to Antivirus and antispyware > Protocol filtering > SSL in the advanced settings of your ESET product and click the Ask about non-visited sites (exclusions can be set) radiobutton. Click OK to confirm.
4. (per example!) Open CCleaner and select the Check for update option > till install latest version > download latest version ... >>> till the end
5. A pop-up window will display informing you about the *???* application trying to communicate via SSL. Click Exclude.
6. This excludes the *???* certificate from being checked by your ESET product. To verify this setting navigate to Antivirus and antispyware > Protocol filtering > SSL > Certificates > Excluded certificates.
7. After confirming the exclusion, navigate to Antivirus and Antispyware > Protocol filtering > SSL and revert the SSL filtering mode settings, i.e. select the option Always scan SSL protocol. Verify the option Apply created exceptions based on certificates is selected.
8. CCleaner will be able to complete the update without interference after you finalize these changes.
Can you check your firewall history logg iff the above dit'n work, To see something was blocked?
Are you using only 1 virus&firewall programme? Iff not, Delete 1.
Have you checked already Firefox: Extra > Options > Security.
AND
Firefox: Extra > Options > Advanced. To see iff something is blocked there?
I.E: Extra > Internet options > Advanced.
And
I.E: Security > Privacy policy webpage’s. To see if something is blocked there?
Don't know about Google Chrome or other browsers you are using, Because don't have them.
Other security sethings?
A other little trick, But not alway's recomanded: Delete completly your eset security suite.
http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=co ... d=SOLN2116
After deleting, Re-Install it. (When it Re-Install, It will check your computer fore all the programmes on your computer, And trust them or ask you to trust them
In a other post you mention the idea to change operation system, Don't do this before you had a "Windows Upgrade Advisor" scan.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/window ... visor.aspx
Some times it is cheaper to buy a new computer then to up-grade a older one (You will have to buy a new operating system as W7, Memory, Proccesor, Some times even other hardware)
Hope the above will help you, And keep in mind, I'm a non native English speacker

Re: Problems downloading software updates
I've copied this to the correct thread:
Frans this is all a bit intense, mind stretching, but you could be on the right track with it being related to ESET.
Firstly, note as I have since done the updating of CCleaner, via another computer, I used WinAmp to update.
I found my way through your points 1-3 as instructed. However, when I tried to do a download it still wouldn't do it, that is No 5 didn't happen and nor did the download proceed. After a minute or two I got an error message:
"Part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read."
However, I then went into the Protocol Filtering Excluded Applications where there was a long list (all unchecked), and checked (ticked) WinAmp which it then allowed me to download. However I didn't get any Exception Messages, so after reverting the SSL filtering mode settings option back to "Always scan SSL protocol", I am of course back to square one.
I'll think about it some more. It smells too much like it being something to do with ESET. I might try scrapping ESET and starting again with either ESET or another AV Suite.
A related question, I did note in the screen where the SSL Filtering Mode settings were, there was an option (already checked): "Block encrypted communications utilizing the obsolete protocol SSL v2". I presume that that should be checked?
I just look at the steps involved in removing ESET from one's computer!!!!

Re: Problems downloading software updates
Arjay,
I have made some research fore you, (Eset and Firefox4.0 helpdesk) With the problems you describe, Nothing found. So possible something is corupted.
First make a online scan to see iff everything is OK. Do this scan please!
http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner
When nothing found, Delete your eset suite as described! "BUT" read the folowing verry carefull before starting (It could be good to print it out aswell?) Don't use the Windows software remover.
http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=co ... d=SOLN2116
Reinstall the same version you are using now (You will need your unique username and password fore your ESET security product), When it Re-Install, It will check your computer fore all the programmes on your computer, And Eset wil trust them or will ask you to trust them.
You do nothing wrong to un&re-install, But it wil exclude a possibility

Re: Problems downloading software updates
Frans, because of the problems in not being able to download, I can't download the ESET scanner, nor a new version of ESET ready to install after removing the current one.
Do you suggest proceeding with the removal of the current version first?

Hello Arjay.
Sorry I dit'n take attention to the folowing yesterday, Maybe due to my lack on the English language But my Flemish is perfect :-"
When you are in the "Protocol Filtering Exluded Application" And tick WinAmp again (Or anny other programme that don't work properly yet), Is there no possibility to click on "aply or safe or OK"? or just close the folder afther tick the WinAmp, And Excluded it from being scanned? 4.1.6.1.1 and 4.1.6.1.2 beneath!
4.1.6.1 SSL
ESET NOD32 Antivirus enables you to check protocols encapsulated in SSL protocol. You can use various scanning modes for SSL protected communications using trusted certificates, unknown certificates, or certificates that are excluded from SSL‑protected communication checking.
Always scan SSL protocol – Select this option to scan all SSL protected communications except communications protected by certificates excluded from checking. If a new communication using an unknown, signed certificate is established, you will not be notified about the fact and the communication will automatically be filtered. When you access a server with an untrusted certificate that is marked as trusted (it is added to the trusted certificates list), communication to the server is allowed and the content of the communication channel is filtered.
Ask about non‑visited sites (exclusions can be set) ‑ If you enter a new SSL protected site (with an unknown certificate), an action selection dialog is displayed. This mode enables you to create a list of SSL certificates that will be excluded from scanning.
Do not scan SSL protocol ‑ If selected, the program will not scan communications over SSL.
If the certificate cannot be verified using the Trusted Root Certification Authorities store (protocol filtering > SSL > Certificates):
Ask about certification validity – Prompts you to select an action to take.
Block communication that uses the certificate – Terminates connection to the site that uses the certificate.
If the certificate is invalid or corrupt (protocol filtering > SSL > Certificates):
Ask about certificate validity – Prompts you to select an action to take.
Block communication that uses the certificate – Terminates connection to the site that uses the certificate.
4.1.6.1.1 Trusted certificates
In addition to the integrated Trusted Root Certification Authorities store, where ESET NOD32 Antivirus stores trusted certificates, you can create a custom list of trusted certificates that can be viewed in Advanced Setup (F5) > Protocol filtering > SSL > Certificates >Trusted certificates.
4.1.6.1.2 Excluded certificates
The Excluded certificates section contains certificates that are considered to be safe. The program will not check the content.
What is the result when you aply this???
--------------------------------------------
And iff you have a second computer, Home, With a friend or in a internet-shop, You can download the install programm, Safe to desktop, Open a CD/DVD burning programme, And burn the Eset Security Suite you use as a "Data-CD or DVD" (Disk space Eset download: +-41 MB)

Beware I don't use Eset, But i think you point it out with the WinAmp!

Problems downloading software updates
I wonder if my problem downloading updates and software upgrades last week had anything to do with this. I do have the TOT 6MB package:

Problems downloading software updates
Hello Arjay,
So fare i remember you where able to download on your second computer, And i don't think you have two diverend providers? :-"
You where able to download firefox 4.0, And the windows up-dates and some other stuff, I remember.
"... and they couldn’t download the new Firefox 4, which came out on March 26."
Thus, I don't think it have something to do with the TOT 3 or 6 Mbps packed. But iff I'm wrong I would happy to learn from
Are all your computer problems solved in the mean time?
Frans.
PS: Some nice remark in the Phuket News article "or possibly by forgetting to pay the bill."
