Recently a friend was stung by a bee, his wife houhgt it was extremly funny, this big farrang hurt by a bee, In the meantime he has great difficulty in breathing and is having chest pain. Finally after his pleading in between her laughing, he finally gets her to a call an ambulance. Where he get treatment. He is allergic and could have died. When she relates this story to this day she still thinks it's funny.
Had my own experience tonight, not as drastict by any means but not a lot of fun at the moment. Had a cap come off and to be honest it hurts like hell. The wife thought it was funny.
I just don't get it I find no humor in others pain. Why do these people find thing like this funny?

Two things Ray,Thais laugh to cover up feelings and in this case, out of ignorance!I have seen both happen amongst many different Thais, some I knew well and knew they were not hard non-caring people! Most could not explain their actions because they can't talk about the feeling of fear, others just did not understand!
Allergy does not compute!Big falang showing pain from a bee, does not compute!

Is this really about Thai people?
There is a show on TV: "America's funniest home videos".
It's a big succes, most of the videos show people falling, slipping or bouncing into each other. A lot of people have to laugh about it.
But if you look closely to some of the video clips, you can see that some people get hurt really bad.
I think that people don't laugh because someone is getting hurt, but I think that they laugh at the weird situation or the funny look on a person's face.

Yes I understand what you are saying.
There's also, laughing because a person is confused and doesn't know what to do, or laughing out of panic.
But when knowing Thai people, I think you also know that they like the simple slapstick kind of humor. You can see that on Thai TV every day.
And Thai people are more relaxed and are joking around a lot, not worrying too much about someone's bruised ego.

I've seen many numerous near misses of mutilation and death on the farm, and some minor mutilations. Each time it was same old thing that they would laugh. To start with I used to go balistic at them, but over time I actually learnt that their way of reacting was just another but a more pleasant way of releasing the stress created by the incident, and if any one got injured the laughing would stop immediately and everyone would help the victim.
The only disappointing thing, was always that the near miss would not register to that it could of been a seriuos injury and therefore we should not do it that way again. It is only after someone gets injured that they would think about changing.

I remember when I was here permanently for about 2 months.I am living in the family home with my fiancee at the time!Their was an older lady named Nue that was the neighborhood collector of ''junk'',cardboard, old clothes, metal etc.She was kind of a family friend and would stop by in the ''hot'' part of the day to chat and take a nap.
One day her home, stored with cardboard, burned down and took 2 neighbors house with it.The neighborhood was very angry at her,and she was completely wiped out.My fiancee and her mother were talking about it to me and laughing about it!
It angered the heck out of me,as I felt real sorry for her and I didn't understand the humor in the situation!
I told my fiancee to give her 2,000 baht!''What for?'' was her reply.I didn't understand any of the reactions of them or other people in our neighborhood! When I enquired,I was told''Stan to serious''!

Not realising that I had closed the patio door. Could of broken her nose,or worse, the glass could of shattered and she could of been lacerated beyong belief! Bruised her knee as well, I am still chuckling as I write this > I am a bad boy !!

I regularly go for a ride on my Moto cross or Enduro bikes around a track I have on my property. I manage to fall off most times I ride as I try a little too hard. Even though I wear all the protective equipment including a quality helmet I usually go back home with scratches and blood coming from some where. The first time I came home injured my wife was all concerned and took care of my injuries. There was no hint of any humour in her toward my self inflicted wounds.
But after a few repeats she now smiles and actually gets a laugh out of my stupid ness to self inflict injuries especially at my age.
If you appear to be in control and still standing they must think you are tough and they laugh about it.
So I guess it is the moment and how well the person knows you as to their reaction to an injury. I am sure that any Thai would be just as caring and emotionally upset as any other person if a loved one was obviously seriously injured.
