Falang is the Lao word for foreigner. The Issan are ethnically Lao and as in my wife's village they speak Lao rather than Thai. However because of the schooling they will read and write in thai. I believe that this is still true today, It will be interesting to find out when I return this winter for the first time after 35 years.

The story is told is that some time back the Thai and Lao were frequently fighting with the Lao always winning. The Thai couldn't understand why so they sent spies to Vientianne. They discovered that the Lao had a dragon on their side The thai learned where the dragon slept. One night they returned and built a stupa over the dragon hole so the dragon could never escape. To make sure the Lao couldn't cause more problems the entire population of Vientiane was resettled in thailand and have been since known as Issan. The language spoken by the Thai Issan is Lao

This story is based on some fact. At one time the Lao and Thai frequently fought, The Vientianne population was scattered in Thailand. Next time in Vientianne go down the street past the American Embassy and you will come upon a stupa (cone shaped monument) which is believed by many to contain the dragon. Please do not disturb.javascript:emoticon('')

So to sum up, - Sorry grandad, no one seems to be able to throw any light on who attacked your friend. Though there has been some speculation that perhaps he had upset someone during the course of the evening. Hopefully he may have a better idea if that could be the case, or indeed if he can give descriptions to the police.

Well that one is easy stand if had been Americans one would have held the beer to prevent spillage have to be frugal with the baht the way it is agianst the dollar. Sorry enough of the silliness.

Hope the guy does OK in his recovery. Any clue as to what got things going? My first thought is that there seems to be something about Mr. Tongs that for some reason of late seems to be a heaven to bar fights. I thin k that this is about four in recent month that even a cave dweller such a myself knows of.

This things are amazing to me, when I first came here I was in the bars eveynight and never once saw a fihgt, but I didn't go to Mr. Tongs either.

What was different less farrangs in the area I went to Thai bars where they seem to want to enjoy the evening instead of fighting and arguing. When a Thai got to drunk and a little out of hand his friends controlled him so things didn't go anyfurther, In that time I never even had so much as a cross word sent my way. I sit enjoyed my evening and minded my own business.

I was more interested in finding girls then practising martial arts.

So you adventerous soles who do go out to the real Thai bars how is the atmosphire today. I was always the welcome odity, to practice english on . That could get a bit challenging with the addition of booze to the language, but none the less fun.

I have been to Tongs twice the first few days I was here on my own simply because it was very close to my hotel. At that time the only other place in that general area was Steves. But Mr. Tong took just a bit to much of a liking to me. The other on a date with a girlfriend with another couple that liked the place. Not what I enjoy so I just haven't been there to much myself. So I'm far from an expert and my oppinion may be very wrong.

In my experiance, mr Tong has caused much of the trouble in his bar, twice i have heard him say over the mike that falang are ---- and he just loves to take their money.

Which is quite interesting as Mr Tongs is a falang owned bar, tong is just the manager.

His original ex boxfriend is a Swiss guy who's about 60 now.
