Street food pastry

Post by zenas » July 22, 2008, 1:29 pm

I was at Udorn RTAFB back in 1971. A streetside pastry was sold just outside the main gate and downtown. A basic ingredient was Carnation Milk and maybe some powdered sugar and egg. All was mixed together, poured onto a griddle, cooked briefly, then rolled up slightly larger than a cigar for serving. The pastry sure was tasty and enjoyed one in BKK several years ago but no one could tell me what it was called. Any help would be great .

Think it's called a 'Rotti', absolutely delicious.
It's basically a crepe or pancake I beleive and you can have sliced up banana and fussels milk (condensed milk) drizzled over it.
They make them in Bangkok and also Koh Chang but I havent seen any one selling them in Udon, yet, just as well, very fattening!

Zenas,
The locals in Udon call it Roti.
There is a Roti guy who does the rounds in my wife's village.
Udon Thani, best seen through your car's rear view mirror.

Real roti does not contain egg. But if that is what it was called, then that is what it was called.

Usually eggs are extra, one has to ask for them. They are put in after the dough is cooked and the dough folded over the eggs.

Here's another one of my great business ideas 8) .
How about a combination stall that sells roti's, schwarma sanwiches, and Mexican burritos. All great bar food, all food that can be held with one hand while sipping a drink with the other hand or all great food that can be held with one hand while fondling some girl with the other hand. ;)

You entrepreneurial minded people and Udon Day & Night people take notice.

You would need four hands though..1 for the schwarma, 1 for the burrito, 1 for the Roti(egg or no egg up to chew,,lol) and 1 for the beer and girl...now i reckon i could hold a Roti, or a Burrito or the schwarma in one hand whilst the other is holding the beer or a wench or my choice...but to hold all the food and beer and have a feely feel could turn out a bit of a mess......now if you have an idea of a sort of glove attachment which would enable to handle all the hand held snacks the beer and a chicky girlie girl that could be a winner, ..........Introducing from Ronco....'The Multi-snack Beer Glove' only $19.99, plus post and packaging plus TAX of various amounts.

As coincidence happens, I saw a program on one of the Thai channels tonight.
They had a guy on it (from Phichit) who is making a bit of a name for himself making & selling Loti/Roti. Including fillings - like banana, chocolate, strawberry. Boy am I glad he is not in Udon, from the look of them I would be 100+ kilos within a month or so... :D
