Personally, I don't waste time in bars. I do however try to support a wife and daughter, whom I send to private school, on a Social Security check from the USA. I come from New Orleans where some of the finest foods in the world are served at any number of restaurants for less than this. This has nothing to do with being tight a** and everything to do with being over-charged.

Now Now gentleman, tis the season of good everything...i mean good will, some won't want to pay 1000b for a crimbo slap up meal, and some will, if you live full time in udon on retirement that 1000 baht + may seem pang and times that by 2 or 3 maybe plus add on something for the kiddies and its probably the sort of cost you can live off for a week or two, plus the fact personally for me its not really the same as having a chrissy dinner back in UK, had plenty over the years in bangkok/pattaya/phuket etc the atmosphere is no where near a christmas feel....its just another day in 90 degrees heat.
noodles and turkey balls for me. :D

So, what are the choices for Christmas dinner?

1,000 baht at Good Everything.

2,000 baht per couple at Aussie Bar.

150 baht at TJ's.

270 baht at Nong's Ribs (with Beer Lao available to wash it down).

290 baht at Charoensri Hotel's restaurant.

Any others? Bella Italia has put out a spread the last couple of years. How about Irish Clock or Charoen Hotel?

I agree with Diesel Daddy. Never had a bad meal at any of these places. Enjoy your meal wherever you decide to go. Feliz Navidad, everyone.

Last Xmas Dieter's Rauch Kate served up a great meal for 199 baht. He's serving holiday meals again this year, however I'm not sure of the price. Last year the meals were offered from the 23rd-25th.

Dieseldaddy, we will agree to disagree as about half the comments on this thread are split between being an 'overchage' and good value. As far as frequenting bars goes, it is an Aussie institution to get together with your mates, have a few cold beers, and solve the worlds problems. Maybe you Yanks have a different take on bonding with your friends, relaxing, and generally enjoying some down time and de-stressing. We to have many fine restaurants in Sydney where you can dine for less than this most of the year "BUT THIS IS CHRISTMAS". Horses for courses old son. Without prejudice, i dare say that if life in Issan is financially tight , you would struggle to live on the "streets" in the States... Wouldn't this forum be boring if we didn't all have differing opinions ???

Good luck to you and your family, and wishing you a merry Christmas and a happy new year !!!

ARCHIE.

It is all about 'value for money'
If you pay 20 baht for something and it is inedible then that is not good value.
If you pay 2,000 baht & enjoy it then that is good value.
Personally I will be eating (& cooking) at home - but cheap Charlie & I have always like Christmas at home. :D

thinking the same thing, hate to see the family surviving on turkey (maybe getting a bit dry in a week or two) sandwiches. we are here to help save the world from wasted food, when so many don't have enough to eat.

we all know when someone says, well maybe, of if i can, it's not a yes, so, if not saying no, it must be a yes.............what time shall we meet
