Smoking or not in Restaurants
Tobacco Not Entirely Harmful
I'm a non-smoker, but one of those who is not particularly bothered by the sidestream and second-hand smoke that characterizes the environment populated by those who do smoke.
It seems that tobacco is not without some benefits. The following is the review on a book on that theme.
THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF TOBACCO!
A SMOKER'S PARADOX
The benefits of smoking tobacco have been common knowledge for centuries. From sharpening mental acuity to maintaining optimal weight, the relatively small risks of smoking have always been outweighed by the substantial improvement to mental and physical health, Hysterical attacks on tobacco notwithstanding, smokers always weigh the good against the bad and puff away or quit according to their personal preferences. Now the same anti-tobacco enterprise that has spent billions demonizing the pleasure of smoking is providing additional reasons to smoke. Alzheimer's, Parkinson 's, Tourette's Syndrome, even schizophrenia and cocaine addiction are disorders that are alleviated by tobacco. Add in the still inconclusive indication that tobacco helps to prevent colon and prostate cancer and the endorsement for smoking tobacco by the medical establishment is good news for smokers and non-smokers alike.
Of course the revelation that tobacco is good for you is ruined by the pharmaceutical industry's plan to substitute the natural and relatively inexpensive tobacco plant with their overpriced and ineffective nicotine substitutions. Still, when all is said and done, the positive revelations regarding tobacco are very good reasons indeed to keep lighting those cigars - but only 4 a day... - William Campbell Douglass II, MD.
Dr. Douglass will shock you with the amount of evidence that smoking can also be good for you. Political correctness and bias have kept this information away from the public. For the first you can find out the other side of the story. This book is a true "smoking gun"!
Somebody felt strong enough about this doctor's information to post the following on a website:
http://www.eflanger.com/pipes/health-tobacco.htm
But I'm just playing Devil's Advocate here -- as said, I do not smoke, nor do I have intention of taking it up at this stage in my life. I just happen to be personally unaffected by any exposure to the smoking of others.

Conversely - A little thought for others is not too much to ask, especially when people can walk a few yards to eat outside.humyaoyao wrote:A little thought for others is not too much to ask, especially when people can walk a few yards to smoke outside.

The actual point here is that bars and restaurants permit smoking. They have chosen not to ban smoking for the obvious economic reasons.
I would venture a guess that the majority of the patrons in bars and restaurants here are tourists - and not the long time / long term residents.
You may be able to convince the locals to be, as you say, "considerate" of the non-smoking minority in a bar or restaurant - but it does little good when no one else has that mind set.

Agreed, everyone should be considerate and give thought to others. Indeed, I often do take the opportunity to eat outside, in order to be away from smokers. But why should it be me the non smoker who goes outside? I am causing no offence or irritation to smokers.Doc wrote:Conversely - A little thought for others is not too much to ask, especially when people can walk a few yards to eat outside.
Haven't you got this the wrong way round? Surely it is the smokers who should be outside polluting the wide open spaces, and not inside polluting the enclosed eating area, where there may be non-smokers and even young babies and children! What have I done to deserve to be enveloped in a cloud of your unpleasant and toxic smoke?!

Why upon returning home, should I have to shower and wash my clothes and my hair to get rid of your smoke?!!

That is one of the major points here - that the smokers should have the "mindset" to be considerate. As after all, it is they who are causing discomfort, inconvenience and potentially harming/affecting the health of the non-smokers. The non-smoker is doing nothing to the detriment of the smoker!!!!Doc wrote:You may be able to convince the locals to be, as you say, "considerate" of the non-smoking minority in a bar or restaurant - but it does little good when no one else has that mind set.
Sorry to go on about this, but it is something I do feel strongly about, regardless of venue or establishment.

When I was in 'one place' I could see the "NO SMOKING" sign (gee! I must a winer - smoke couldn't have been that bad if I could still see sign) through the smoke and my first thought was, what a fine bunch of caring, considerate, sensitive folks we have here

A few more anti-smoking sloguns for your enjoyment. Pay attention. If this thread ends, what will we all do ??

Cancer cures smoking.
P.T. Barnum said 'there's a sucker born every minute'. Tobacco companies depend on this.
A cigarette in the hand is worth nothing.
Tobacco companies kill their best customers.
Smoking sucks.
A smoker is the only creature with two buttholes.

The first bit i think that was a little joke C/R. calm down.Coconut Rubber wrote:I think that anyone to talk about persons eating at a restaurant should eat outside, so someone can smoke inside the restaurant is way out of line.
Also to question the medical science about the bad health effects of smoking is childish. This is the kind of reasoning you would get from a teenager.
this is turning in to a smoking is bad for you thread.
Errr yes we all know that, people who do smoke love it,strangely enough i smoke like a tropper in Thailand , Must have Marlboro lights, a pack in the car and a pack in my pocket,i have opened packs all over the place, but on entering the airport i cease sucking on a ciggie and don't wish to have one till i reach thailand again.
Now cigars that is a true pleasure, "one" of lifes fine moments a bottle of Merlot and a decent cigar to puff on.
the smell of cigars i have always been drawn too, it was an uncle who smoked them, i think that must have got me into them.
But them sure do make your clothes smell, but worth it when smoking one. imo.
and just to add about the smoked fish/meats it repeats on me so not too keen.

OK next post.......
Anti smoker that I am, I do enjoy a nice cigar. Used to order them from 'Cuban Cigar Factory' in San Diego. Presidentes with a nice maduro wrap, tasty sucker. Don't care for small ones, smoke gets in the eyes
, like the stogies. Only down side, would wipe out my taste buds for a week
WOW, a Bosco's Germantown Ale, (local brew pub outside memphis), and nice stogie, also one of the only places around you can smoke cigars at, just a bicyle ride away, and the best part, the ride home was almost all downhill. BLISS.
