I'm actually bringing some kippers and pork sausages next week for a friend in Udon who is also from the IoM and I don't think I'll have any room left.

Kippers with baked beans can be a very tasty but explosive combination - in golfing terms, be careful with the follow through :yikes:

Yes you can eat them in air conditioned restaurants - as long as you sit outside so as not to upset any of the smokers inside

(Now if that doesn't somehow try to get us back on topic - I don't know what else will ) :?

Stinky dead fish. Something a self respecting American wouldn't eat.

Don't you Americans kill your fish before you eat them? LOL

I'll put a lock on the goldfish if ever Docs in the area
For our American friends. Kippers. North sea herrings opened , gulleted and hung to dry in a wooden shed in which a fire is burning, normally oak chippings, giving a delightful aroma and a delicious taste when eaten. Now if the old weeds , expensively packed, lit and put in the mouth, had an aroma like these I wouldn't be so vociferous in my complaining.

C'mon guys and gals . As a born again ex smoker (three times over ),I have come to realise that all the huffing and puffing I used to do about MY right to smoke was ,and is , just a cover up for my DRUG ADDICTION. I am talking about nicotine .
Everyone knows smoking is bad for ones health . So all I have to say on the subject is that ANYONE who smokes is an idiot ( as well as a drug addict ) including my 77 year old Ma who has been smoking for 65 years .
Today France just outlawed smoking in bars and restaurants .66000 people a year dead . c'mon guys and gals.

At a time when the Climate Control Lobby is saying that Global Warming is due to their being too many people on earth, I can not understand why there are so many people concerned about others, such as smokers, killing themselves. What about freedom of choice? On the other hand, perhaps we don

I think the horse has been flogged well past its demise in this one, but it may be having an effect because I had a late breakfast in the Irish.
I went to sit down and saw the a couple of guys had cigs on the table, but when they needed one he just got up and wandered outside as did the owner.
The breakfast was excellent, top service too.

maybe they are taking there own survey, and seeing if revenues improve. that would be interesting. i'm sure they are aware of the smoking discussion.

An Odd View

I thought the following diversion was nicely done, although I did kind of lose track of what the author meant in one of his statements towards the end -- it's from Bill Bonner's DAILY RECKONING investment newsletter:

The frogs have succumbed to the spirit of the age. We're having lunch with two hard-boiled smokers later today - will they light up despite the new ban? We'll see. The French usually have the good sense to ignore the law; public smoking may still survive in the land of Liberte.

"C'est la merde..." said a taxi driver. "Everything is forbidden. Everything. I'm sick of it."

Soon, we fear, people will not be allowed to smoke in private either.

But how do the health police know the world will be a better place without the smell of cigarette smoke? In the old days, a man sentenced to death would get a chance to smoke a cigarette before the firing squad shot him dead. Or, a man wheezing with a critical chest wound on the battlefield would ask his buddies for one last smoke. The U.S. army gave out cigarettes; it settled nerves. Our own father reported that he couldn't have waged war in the Pacific islands without the help of the Philip Morris Company.

And how could you discuss Sartre or Foucault, without cigarette smoke to blot out the imbecilities of it? How could Marlene Dietrich have appeared so seductive, without a cigarette dangling in her hand? Or, Humphrey Bogart...what would he have been without smokes? Bacall might have paid no attention to him.

Thousands of people die because of tobacco, say the meddlers. True. But how many survive without it? It is never a question of whether...but only when.

Cigarettes have surely hastened millions to an early grave...but who measures the good they might have done? Who can tell, except the smokers themselves?

We have never smoked a cigarette, but we are thinking of taking it up just to find out

Doubtful if it is the two that I am thinking of. They are just tourists here for a short visit before going back to their own version of heaven - the Philippines.

Great, using the French as a role model ;) for smoking and civil behavior. What's next, using the Russians as a role model for honesty in government? Or the US for that matter.
I stopped in to a sponsor's cafe that I usuallly frequent on Saturdays for a post-accupuncture burger. It usually has decent air flow but today, with multiple smokers, it was unbearable. As I like the food and the staff, I will just have to do a "sniff test" before eating there again. I won't rule them out, but I will be more careful and observant before deciding to eat there again. I ate quickly and departed.
My health after quiting 20 years of smoking (16 years ago) has improved so much that I have become a true anti-tobacco fanatic. I taught smoking cessation classes at the Pentagon and had a high success rate. You may as well smoke crack for what it is doing to your body.
The biggest thing you can do to improve your health is to stop smoking. I will stop preaching now, but I will give you the course for free if you want it.

Apologies for keeping this thread going, but here is another reason for any smokers in the UK to abandon ship.

When the new smoking laws come into effect in the summer, anyone caught smoking in a public place witll be fined ฃ50. Approx 3,454 Baht. If you refuse to pay the fine it goes up to ฃ200. Approx 13,814Baht.

Interestingly enough, I was speaking with an old bloke last night that is here visiting from the UK. The first thing out of his mouth in the discussions was the draconian anti smoking laws in the UK. Ofr course, he was totally against them.

He runs a pub there in the UK - and his biggest concern was that business had dropped off dramatically.

And no - he does not read or participate in this forum.

And for Muscle - I have held my peace on this with you long enough: I recollect the night that we first met at the Down Under Bar and you were quite happy to be standing at the bar with all the smokers talking to me whilst I was smoking like a chimney. Not a single complaint from you at all. Hence - I take your claims to be allergic to smoke with a rather large grain of salt. [-X [-X
