Khun Aardvark, I just read this article now. Thank you for posting it. The analysis is excellent. Thaksin did many selfish and unlawful things but he did bring politics to the countryside for the first time. Prior to him, politics to the rural people was always about some elite in Bangkok doing something to them, not for them.Aardvark wrote:An Opinion .... http://www2.bangkokpost.com/opinion/opi ... -are-equal
We make our world significant by the courage of our questions and by the depths of our answers.

Fred Barnard had it right.......a picture is worth a thousand words. If you googled 'junta' and you only saw the photo from that article, well, there'd hardly be a need to provide any commentary.Laan Yaa Mo wrote:Khun Aardvark, I just read this article now. Watching some footage from Ferguson, Uniformed black officers not in riot gear, Being assaulted by water bottles. I think this would fit within the Justice's opinion.

Prince Philip has been caught saying the f word while encouraging a photographer to take a photo of the Prince and Battle of Britain veterans. Good on the old codger. I think it's good that he feels free to say this word in some circumstances even with the cameras running.

Isn't it GOOD the British do not have the same laws as here, you can say whatever you want about the British Royal family and most would ignore you. Freedom of Speech means you use your own set of ethics to speak politely about people you do not know also ensuring you are not too rude about them, freedom comes at a price ......commonsense. Some people have it others do not.

The narrowing of debate Down Under
"What this reaction to a contrary opinion on gay marriage captures is deeply troubling: a militant conformism. The parameters of public debate, the areas in which ideas and opinions can do battle, are shrinking before our eyes. A few years ago, arguing that the institution of marriage is a heterosexual institution would have been considered an unremarkable, and perfectly legitimate, view. But now this view is being pushed beyond the boundaries of what is acceptable, of what is appropriate. To defend traditional marriage today is to ask for the tweet-happy to brand ‘bigot’ across your face, turn you into a mocking meme, or just shame you back under the supposed rock from whence you crawled. Criticism of gay marriage is called hateful, discriminatory, backward. In the garb of progress, a virulent illiberalism is taking over public life, delineating what views are permissible and what views are not, what views aid the progressive cause, and what views are to be silenced."

I am a liberal, but as I get older I find that I am more intolerant of bigots and other stupid liberals who do not share my point of view. As a liberal I support freedom of speech as long as it doesn't offend any of my principles or beliefs.Er? Ugh! Wot! Oh yeah!

sadly old age brings that on. if you believe in freedom ,then isis have the rights to their caliphate ,their right to sharia. the fact we find their laws repugnant interferes with their right to say what the want. but do we need to defend their rights, how about communists rights, atheists rights .Nazi and anarchists. freedom of speech , you can't defend everyone's right to freedom. now there's an oxymoron for youBonanza wrote:I am a liberal, but as I get older I find that I am more intolerant of bigots and other stupid liberals who do not share my point of view. Confusing freedom with freedom of speech?
You can have as much freedom as you want as long your freedom does not impinge on the freedom of others.
A supporter of IS is free to espouse the benefits of fundamental islam, but not free to kill people who do not agree with him.
Your thinking is muddled.

what is someone stalking bonanza ? the usual adversarial reply , they have the right to free speech, no one has the right to kill people, where did that come up in a thread about free speech ? you mention the right to kill, only you mentioned that subject, please stay on topicronan01 wrote:Doing a bit of stalking?papafarang wrote:sadly old age brings that on. if you believe in freedom ,then isis have the rights to their caliphate ,their right to sharia. the fact we find their laws repugnant interferes with their right to say what the want. but do we need to defend their rights, how about communists rights, atheists rights .Nazi and anarchists. freedom of speech , you can't defend everyone's right to freedom. now there's an oxymoron for youBonanza wrote:I am a liberal, but as I get older I find that I am more intolerant of bigots and other stupid liberals who do not share my point of view.
