Reigniting the Steak Wars

Post by jackspratt » October 17, 2015, 10:49 am

It's been a while since we had a ding-dong, knock-em-out discussion on the subject of steak.

So for the doubters, and disbelievers, it is now official that the world's best steak comes from ................... Oz! \:D/
Australia wins World's Best Steak in first ever global challenge

The steaks were high, but the word is in: Australia has the best steak in the world.

Australia picked up four gold medals and the title for the World's Best Steak in the first ever World Steak Challenge, held in London's Hyde Park.

The competition judged 70 steaks from 10 different countries including England, United States, Canada and Japan.

The top prize was awarded to Frank Albers for a Jack's Creek Wagyu Angus cross that was 450 days grain fed.

There were 11 gold medal-winning steaks, with Australia claiming four medals; more than any other country.........

Me I am and I still am a lover of Scotch Beef, none of that horrible Wagyu stuff thank-you very much. But to each their own, in fact the best was a two day old steak, Good Scotch rump of course which had been languishing in the refrigerator, a little dark but certainly the best I have ever had.

Not disputing, just an observation, but the OZ steaks served locally are the worst steaks I've ever 'tried' to eat. Not one to leave much on my dinner plate when finished, but can't say I tried to finish any of them.

Kudos for the medal collection, but also agree, 10 countries is a poor 'world' survey. Looks damn tasty though.

I wish they would stop calling any steak that does NOT come from Japan, Wagyu, unless it truly is 100 %. Well at least they didn't call it Kobe, as that would be even more ridiculous.

Cannot be many places around Udon selling Oz steaks and a couple of the Oz wagyu variety,VM gives you a selection from US and Oz to eat at home, not seen a Scottish one yet  heard that there was a Thai wagyu steak on offer to buy, googled many times to find an accredited Thai farm for wagyu but always came up blank  :D

Thai french vs import to satisfy our taste buds,Thai wagyu will pass, thank you vely much 8)

Must try a sizzler import steak, so if not satisfied, then can make up the expense paid by cleaning out the salad bar \:D/

So, the whole thing has been decided by the offerings from one beast!

Next someone is going to tell us that eggs from forced fed 'battery hens' are better than 'free range'.

I, for one, am not going to let some obscure judges tell me which is the best steak. Apart from that it looks overcooked for me. :yikes:

Food Is GREAT: British beef and lamb are back in Thailand after two decades of absence
https://www.gov.uk/government/world-loc ... of-absence

The beef and sheep eaters will be able to make direct comparisons soon enough as the ban on British beef and lamb will soon be lifted ( the foot has been removed from the mouth and the mad are now sane????). I've eaten Kobe steak in Japan and Aussie steak and for me a juicy t-bone or rib-eye from me local butcher cooked on the grill is as good as it gets. I also have to agree with 12345 that I also have been served supposed Aussie steak in Thailand that I wouldn't give to a black dog - tough, wiry with sinews and gristle absolute crap - I'm sure others will have had different experiences and hopefully they will share.

Also.......... what were they judging, the 'meat', beef of one select cow, from the herd...

or ... the finished 'cooked' results.

Contests, same as polls and surveys..........

On any given day, anyone, well, I can, make a good piece of 'thrifty' purchased beef taste damn good and tender. Know how to cook it, just as, if not more important, than the beef itself.

Anyone can ruin a good cut of ฿4500+ Wagyu beef.

Of course........... I cheat. Take a nice local rib-eye roast, prep and slow cook as prime rib, then slice down to nice thick steak serving. Since I like that seared surface and don't have a blow torch, I'll flash saute' it w/butter to add some fat to the local crap, some seasoning, simply ground salt and pepper. And walla, you have a tender, juicy rib eye steak, you can cut with a fork. At a thrifty 575 per kilo. Saving that 4000 baht per kilo for the next seafood dinner and sea view room when out and about.

Not exactly rocket science................ or you, not me, can roll the dice, and waste a lot of money, letting someone else try to please you at any one of the overpriced inferior restaurants. Which for me, has failed miserably here. I simply don't order beef out, unless it's on a bun.

I use to be a big steak eater
Hardly ever bother these days
Much prefer a good beef mince, rissole or sausage
And yes I still have all my own teeth for chewing

Wait I thought a steak was only good if the place you get it from is a mate or panders to a given customer who then makes a point of posting positive reviews & pics..

And that the links and reference materials posted are just a smoke screen to provide a false sense that this is destined to something other than a clown thread, or at best cover once more what has been debated ad nauseum in at least 20 other similar threads.

Surely no one really cares anymore what steak is best or where it comes from.

It's just a meal like any other, unless you are really bored or stuck in the "Old Udon" where discourse on such subject matter is the best one living in the sticks outside of town can come up with.

Too bad for clown threads the world has moved on and we can all think for ourselves, objectively or otherwise.

No, not having a bad day. Typed on a phone so not the usual dashing & elegant style sorry.

Just thinking most of these "best steak" "best burger" posts always have an ulterior motive. That's their history at least.

Isn't it like once every 2 or 3 weeks that another one comes along? What about the best Tofu? How about some debate about Broccoli?

It's all so subjective, -Ford vs. Chevy, Elvis vs. The Beatles, etc. And I agree with those who have pointed it out as such.
papafarang wrote:sadly it's up to taste, what is a good steak is nonsense to everyone else
I also agree with what "12345" (as taught by Allah) was on about, ref. cooking techniques applied to non-imported meat.
12345 wrote:On any given day, anyone, well, I can, make a good piece of 'thrifty' purchased beef taste damn good and tender. Know how to cook it, just as, if not more important, than the beef itself.
I have every right to also criticize the silly "studies" and "rankings" and not be cast as a malcontent for doing so.

If anything, -what's the best cut of meat?

I don't know, but it sure would be interesting to find out.

nope, he's just bored , subjective . if someone said this place has the best lasagna, someone else say's this place has the best lasagna, I go to both places and think there both nonsense, nothing but nonsense. what we all should be saying is I like steak from here or steak from here, but partisan BS gets in the way. so in truth you can't believe any posts. good posts say " I had a awesome sunday lunch at the ##### #### ,it was perfect, came with starter, main meal and pudding and only #####" . but what we get is " had lunch, best in town by far" what they tried everywhere else first ?
remember the best beef lasagna in town.. followed by "they don't use beef"
and we know he's the guys his best buddy. if I eat something and it's good I will tell everybody. look good food is good food, or beer, I don't care if I have 4 gyrating nubile young ladies dancing in front of me with short skirts saying "buy one get one free' I will never drink ARCHA .. got drunk tasted it once, thank F##K I was drunk... excuse the language gents, but with my limited IQ I could not replace the word drunk
