A BRITISH triathlete drowned while competing in a race in Thailand yesterday.
William Scott Stewart, 43, was among 1,000 international entrants taking part in the event on the holiday island of Phuket.
The event included a 1.8km swim, a 55km bike ride and a 12km run through the Laguna Phuket resort complex.
Organisers last night confirmed he was pronounced dead at the Krungthep-Phuket Hospital after being found unconscious in the water after getting into difficulty.
It is understood that the swimming leg of the race was split between the Andaman Sea and a lagoon.
The event included participants from 40 countries. According to local reports, Mr Stewart had competed in a triathlon event in Singapore before arriving in Thailand.
The event has been held since 1999 on the upmarket Laguna Phuket resort - which occupies 600 acres of tropical beachfront parkland on the north-west coast of the island.
