Unknown to most members of the public and quite possibly one root cause of police corruption, is the unspoken tradition upheld almost religiously by most, if not all, commissioned police officers _ that commissioned police officers are not supposed to be seen riding city buses.
Whether this is a status problem passed on from one generation of commissioned police officers to another, it has become accepted practice among officers that, once they enlist in the force after graduating from the academy, they must acquire a car, despite their very humble pay cheques, in order to avoid being seen using public transport.
Ridiculous though it may seem, this exclusive, stereotype mindset among the police officer corps needs to be addressed, discussed and rectified.
Like an entrenched dinosaur which resents change, the police force presents the government of Gen Surayud with a monumental challenge, and revamping the National Police Office will certainly be no easy task. Changing their mindset will be even harder. But, at least, something is being done now to bring about change, the impact of which remains to be seen.
