sorry fdmike ....... please say that again i dont understand !!

only jesting ???????

my own train of thought is that us generous good hearted Brits gave you our language along with Canada cos you didnt have one when we invented you ....... and you destroyed it changing the words and their meanings example - I raq , alloominum , etc etc. Now i do like Americans and Canadians but they must speak slowly so i can understand

my case is rested .......... mash history lesson 1

mash ........ i love Sarah Palin

If one were to read the English on the report one would find that in fact they are looking for a budget, as at yet they do not have the wherewithal to even begin to recruit neither do they have the authority to recruit, it is just another project. As the British Council here in Thailand supply nearly half of the budget for English teaching the criteria for teachers will I am sure be high

Now if we also look at the word NATIVE that means one whose country has English as the main language, that will therefore disbar all those countries that think they can speak English let alone teach English. The only countries to which applies are the United Kingdom, USA, Canada, Australia and new Zealand, sure there are some of the smaller islands in the Carribean and Pacific that have English as the main Language but most of their accents would disbar the teaching of English correctly as would all those slang sayings so beloved by the Australians and the Americans which are not true English.

Wages I do feel that is a little pie in the sky quote and i am sure that a reasonable figure would be arrived at. one cannot see that the Foreign teacher would be earning more than the Director can you in reality.

But the bottom line is that they are seeking to get approval for the budget which as yet has NOT been approved so although the idea or the thought processes behind the idea is sound it still has to gain approval budgetary wise and then the guidelines for recruitment and the accreditation, before any newly recruited teacher can even begin to start. but as someone said the system is flawed so we will wait with bated breath.

All it seems to me I recall this subject being brought up before by the Thai govt. It went nowhere then and I would suspect the same will happen again.

PM I think you're jumping to conclusions. I'm not too sure we yanks want to be rubbing elbows with you limeys. That is unless you're buying the beer.

On your bike Mike   I have conversed with both you and Mash and being honest am still not sure if coming from Scunthorpe counts as being a native speaker, unless of course they are using "native"in its purest form as meaning, unrefined?

OK OK we yanks may not speak the Queen's english but I figure we do a whole lot better than what I've heard from other native "English" speakers. Maybe you're right about the use of the word "native"!! Great cycling weather right now (at least today). The weather this year has been really crazy. I figure we're surely in for some snow sooner or later!(-:

TB .... I like to crack a smile first thing in the morning IT GETS IT OVER AND DONE WITH EARLY !! , i can assure you i had the bone removed from my nose when i moved away from SUNNY SCUNNY thus being totally refined rocket fuel not Brent crude .

On a serious note in the past i have met some foreign teachers working in Thailand that had such an accent i couldnt understand them Scotts , Irish , Scousers etc , i do recall Dutch and Swiss chaps getting NATIVE English teaching positions in BKK in the mid 90's . I did team up with a Yank who was an excellent fella dead ringer for Tom Selleck all the Thai old spinster teachers loved him but not me booooooo hoooooooo.

mash .

Paradoxally, the best English in Europe is spoken by Irish People.
Their accent is charming and easy to understand, it does not have that
lowclass effect of Cockney or Estuary nor the ear-attacking features of Scouse. (I'll omit Scottish as that's got to be the best).
