I read it was a argument over Sokran water throwing.
If you on foot your fair game but I think throwing water at moving vehicles (motorbikes) is a stupid and dangerous tradition. Unfortunate for this guy, it's also dangerous to mouth off to a stranger.

despite the drubbing the fellow took, it was nice to see that the surrounding Thais came to his assistance and actually blocked the guy in the black car from leaving with one guy telling another to call the cops...

The biggest issues I always have with these videos (police actions, mob fights in hamburger joints, street confrontations, etc.) is that they represent no more than the 2nd half of the total event.
We rarely ever see what initiated the confrontation; and most of the time, that first half is what is necessary in order to understand it all and pass judgment.
