LHC, Good Or Bad?

Post by Bangsean_girl » September 15, 2008, 11:19 am

A few days ago, after having the ordinary day from uni, came home and then search on google as usual! Then I found the very strange photo on google. It was the photo of circle machine (which makes no sense to me). I was wondering why was it so important that google put it in the main page! So I clicked on the photo and found this LHC, or ( Large Hadron Collider), I was amazed by the work of CERN, that they finally could find the key to unlock the secret of universe! According to wikepedia: "LHC <The Large Hadron Collider> is the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator complex, intended to collide opposing beams of protons (one of several types of hadrons) with very high kinetic energy. Its main purpose is to explore the validity and limitations of the Standard Model, the current theoretical picture for particle physics. It is theorized that the collider will confirm the existence of the Higgs boson, the observation of which could confirm the predictions and missing links in the Standard Model, and could explain how other elementary particles acquire properties such as mass."(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider)
The article excited me alot since the CERN is trying to make the LHC energy become as fast as the light!! If this experiment sucess! I'm sure there will be many kind of exciting things happend in this world!! Scientist can further the work base on this theory. For example, We will be able to find out more about our universe. if we have more than 4th dimension or not! Moreover, people will be able to travel as fast as light and if that happend we all will be able to turn back time! (according to Stephen Hawking theory about the time machine). However, there are good and bad side! the thing I concern about it is what if the power they find will make our world become more dangerous as it is now? If people can make such a powerful power! (even more powerful than nuclear power) then what if sombody is abusing the power of LHC!! However, I do belive that the LHC will bring benefit to the world more than aything else! since "Life is either a great adventure or nothing”, I'm pleased that the CERN working on this experiment!!! well, I just think this topic is super duper interesting at the moment, and who knows maybe in the future the time traveller will be exist!!! (can't wait for that to happend!) :D

But what if as has been suggested in doing the experiment it creates a black hole and the earth is sucked into it????
You may think im taking the michael but im not its a genuine concern and the scientists dont have the answer as this is all new science... it think it is a good thing and will be benificial to the human race and the earth, however i also thinks it carries risks that we are unable to quantify prior to this experiment, which i understand will take about a year until the actual collision of these atoms

Apprently, if a black hole happen, it wil be extremely short- lived black hole, but we never know til it happen right? :|

The LHC is indeed a very exciting project and could well reveal many mysteries of the universe, although I would think it will take many years to process the data.
I believe one of the main aims is to try and marry together quantum and relative physics, two theories that would appear in contradiction to each other, thus forming the Grand Unification Theory or Life, The Universe and Everything  Don't Panic
Not sure about the time travel Bangsean Girl, it is one thing to accelerate a nuclei to the speed of light but to surpass it is something else completely. A certain fellow named Einstein came up with the theory that as speed increases so does energy which in turn increases the mass. To cut a long story short the faster you go the more mass you have, thus requiring more and more energy to be able to accelerate. Going beyond SOL would therefore require infinite energy which of course does not exist.
So I cant see us walking with dinosaurs anytime soon but who knows.
As for the potential abuse of the power the LHC could produce, I wouldn't loose any sleep over it.
The cost, technology and brain power required would all make it prohibitive at this stage but again who knows? Maybe we will all be swallowed by a planet eating black hole next week!

Oh my Buddha, I have turned into a geek :ugly:

well as I read the book "The Universe in a nushell" by Stephen Hawking, I always want to know the mystry of the black hole, and if it happen by the experiment from CERN, it probably bring us beyond time? or travel through time? maybe we wont die? hahah as one of Hawking theory say the way to travel beyond time is by the black hole! I think MAYBE if there is a black hole, we wont be sucked up by it. On the other hand, we will be in the other world ? oh well I watch the sci fi too much you can see ! hahaha

I would bet that if we got sucked up into another world, we would not be recognizable as the molecules from which we are now made, let alone people. :yikes:

But, watching a tiny black hole could be very informative.

Had a look at the You Tube video.
Did you see the ad for Duracell at the start, it was there twice.

The good thing about the LHC is it might answer some questions for some Physicists, but they probably will not mean much to the other 6 billion of us... the bad thing is it cost $10 billion dollars just to build it. I might be a scientist, but as a freshwater biologist I would rather have seen it spent saving a few species.... like the dolphins which recently became extinct. Any practical applications from a discovery in the LHC will probably take decades if not more to come about. Anyone know of any practical applications arising from all the other particle accelerators built in the last 50 years?

Article in the Australian news the other day , advising that hackers had cracked the security code for this experiment , and stated it was a breeze to crack it etc...

I know its hard to imagine how the LHC might bring us important technologies that will make our lives longer and better, but there is an excellent chance it will. Just give it time.

The development of virtually all of what we consider 'high tech" these days was dependent upon scientific discoveries after WWII (About 1947 for the youngsters). Without an good understanding of quantum physics, the internet (if were would still be one) would be much slower and not as reliable. Our computers (if we were to have them) would be larger and have much less memory (anybody remember magnetic core memory?). Your hard drive would still be about 20 megabytes, and lasers would not lase.

Ok, down off my soapbox now.

The point is, everybody but those close to the LHC thinks their field should have received the funding. Cancer, AIDs, Malaria, world hunger, the Global Warming people, Doctors Without Borders, those who want to see men go to Mars...

Personally, I am glad to see that the U.S. isn't paying for it :D
