Pet wouldn't listen to reason

Post by LoongLee » January 12, 2010, 4:13 am

SOUTHWOLD, Ontario (AP) — A Canadian man has been mauled to death by his pet tiger.

Norman Buwalda, 66, went into the tiger's cage on his property in Southwold, Ontario, to feed the animal on Sunday and was attacked and killed, police said. The tiger weighed some 660 pounds (300 kilograms).

Ontario Provincial Police Constable Troy Carlson said Monday there were no witnesses.

A family member discovered the man's body and was able to lock the tiger in a separate part of the cage, isolating Buwalda from the pacing tiger until an ambulance arrived.

The attack is not the first one to occur on Buwalda's property, which houses a number of exotic animals.

In June 2004, a 10-year-old boy was attacked by a tiger that was led out of its cage on a leash so the child could take its picture.

Same tiger.

I wonder if the cat will get its own cell in a zoo with a TV to watch, and steaks and endangered species to devour?!?

Or will it be hung by its neck until dead?

Canada no longer has the death penalty so the tiger is likely to get a 25-year life sentence with no chance for parole until 2022.

The adjective "wild" in the term "wild animal" is there for a reason. It's not superfluous.
Just because you put a tiger in a cage in your back yard doesn't change the nature of the beast.

Maybe the tiger can hire a good defense attorney and get his sentence reduced to a misdemeanor. The fact that he's a "farking wild animal" might work to his benefit.

Apparently after the 10 year was attacked (see OP), the local council banned Mr Buwalda from keeping exotic animals on his property.

Mr Buwalda then challenged the ban in court, and was successful.

Som Nom Na.

Great news for all you Tiger fans (Detroit, L.S.U., Clemson, Auburn, Princeton), the tiger has not been arrested after all. The fate of the alleged murdered will have it decided by the family of the deceased. This is frontier justice at its best. This link gives you a video of the tiger after it attacked the young boy five years ago.

The World Society for the Protection of Animals says the tiger-mauling death of an Ontario man should be a wake-up call for the province.

Police say Norman Buwalda, 66, went into the tiger's cage on his property in Southwold, Ont., 30 kilometres southwest of London, on Sunday afternoon to feed the animal when the tiger attacked and killed him.

The WSPA says the death was a tragedy that could have been prevented had the province banned the keeping of dangerous exotic pets when it revised its animal protection law earlier this year.

The group says Ontario is the only province that doesn't require a licence to keep dangerous exotic animals and it's calling on the Ontario government to implement licensing to help prevent future deaths.

The society says about 60 per cent of all Canadian zoos are in Ontario, and it estimates 500 exotic cats are kept as pets in the province.

Melissa Matlow, programs officer for the society, says keeping a tiger on your property should be considered as dangerous as keeping a loaded gun.

Meanwhile, Constable Troy Carlson said on Monday that the Ontario Provincial Police believes the tiger was being kept legally on Mr. Buwalda's property.

Const. Carlson said it is up to Mr. Buwalda's family to decide the fate of the male tiger.

“The tiger's in his cage right now on the property, and for the time being that's where the tiger's going to remain,” he said. “It'll be up to the family to determine whether they're going to keep the tiger or have it sent somewhere.”

A 66-year old Ontario man was killed by a 650-pound Siberian tiger he kept on his own property Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred some five years after a 10-year old Toronto boy was seriously injured by a tiger on the property

Very sorry about the death of this human being and condolences to his family. I beleive that those wild animals either should be protected in their own natural kingdom or in a zoo for those living there or born there. Remember "Boomer" the lion that ran away from his master near Maniwaki Qc a couple of years back...he is now in the Granby Zoo and is a star attraction and well treated. The lion seems very happy and everyone is safe. Merci-Thank you Lucien Alexandre
