Sometimes we Kiwis worry about Australia. I understand your last 2 Prime Ministers have been born in the UK. That's not a good trend. There are lots of talented people in Australia. Someone like Shane Warne or Eddie McGuire would make a good Prime Minister.

Hopefully Abbott's Kiwi wife will counter his inherent British outlook to some degree. But I'd argue she has nothing to do with his fondness for budgie smugglers or lycra. I also wouldn't blame that on the UK.

Our NZ tory government is opening a discussion on our flag. I'd put the chances at 30 to 50% that we're going to change our flag in the next 2 to 3 years. If they pick a good design to run against the current one, I think we're going to change.

I can't see Abbott going for a Baron Spratt of Ban Dung. That sounds too much like an asylum seeker getting knighted. In other words, it's not British enough.

Nope - depending on how you define "last 2", Rudd was born in Nambour, Queensland.

Another Kiwi displaying a woeful ignorance of Australia's proud political history. :D

Good one Jack. I had overlooked the musical chairs. I withdraw my allegation.

Rudd was a real nut job. It seems a shame he was born in Australia. It would be nice to blame him on the poms.

To me, Rudd seems exceedingly sane compared to the Pom in the chair at the moment - hopefully very short term.

Yes, I have serious concerns about Abbott too. From a NZ perspective, Gillard and Abbott were and are great. Rudd, however, was only interested in the big boys.

Personally I have always quite liked Malcolm Turnbull. I think there's a good PM in waiting there.

I see Barry Cassidy at the ABC website wrote:

"In any case, restoring knighthoods won't help the monarchists. That debate - republicans versus monarchists - has laid dormant for many years, a situation that the monarchists should welcome. Reviving it in such a provocative way can't help.

It doesn't help the Prime Minister either. He has always had the reputation in the minds of some of being a somewhat old-fashioned anglophile. This will reinforce that.

The problem with the honours system is consistency and credibility.

Gough Whitlam stopped naming knights and dames. Malcolm Fraser took it up again. Bob Hawke ended the practice and now Tony Abbott has brought it back."

Wow. NZ is at least a lap behind Australia on all this. I think John Howard looks good staying out of this circus.

It brings a tear to my eye just knowing the Kiwis maintain British attitudes and values.

I say, steady on, old son, we've had some very good prime ministers: Tony Bliar, the One-Eyed Idiot, Ted Heath...

The next Labor government should appoint him as Ambassador to Nana Plaza. I'm told he might find a few C in the Fs there. Each evening before he's trashed Tony, the super keen anglophile, could spend the early evenings hanging out with Britain's finest males. Apologies to Earnest if I'm still not steady enough.

No apologies necessary, old bean! Britain's finest males? The bounder has yet to give me a call.

Rejoice Australia. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have arrived with Prince George. If the Duke has a sword with him he might be able to knight someone. Who would be first off the ranks? Who would get Tony the most votes?

Sir Eddie McGuire? Sir James Packer? Sir Shane Warne? I like that one. Sir Wayne Carey? Another good one - this one for services to team sports. Dame Pauline Hanson? Sir Julian Assange?

I understand John Howard is now too much of a progressive to accept a knighthood. Perhaps he's sliding down Malcolm Fraser's slippery slope? That will be great fun to watch.

Personally I'd knight the first Aussie journo to work out who drank Barry O'Farrell's $3,000 bottle of wine. Even if it's Andrew Bolt.

The closest the traitor Assange will get to royalty is Lord Lovat's chopping block in the Tower.

Nice one wazza. Who do you think was at this meeting?

A nice young Thai massage therapist working in the back room at a 24 hour Thai massage shop around the corner from Barry's Sydney home?

Normally u don't leave notes in Knock Shops GT, switch a number is fair game, to knock out the Pimp etc

But as we have see the Pigs in Trough Commission ( ICAC ) notes do come back to bite you.

I bet a search of his house would show the bottle still there and filled with a cheap NZ red, to make it look full.

I like cheap reds wazza. I feel like one right now.

I'm still chasing the story about this $3,000 bottle. Who drank it? This is an important question for Australian political history.

Nice avatar Earnest. Was the tin foil hat made in China? I think one made in the US is also needed to help keep the dreadedl NSA at bay.

I must say Prince William and family are putting on a spiffingly good show downunder. A really class act. Soon the Aussies will want to be more British than the British. A cup of tea anyone?
