are we talking about Caster Semeya now..?. anyways...me thinks she has dual passports, she came from Nigeria so must of been a nigerian with a passport...unless she came in the back of a truck...so she must be holding two passports, in which case why no mention of the Nigerian governmant 'helping' the girl out....or even her or her Family screaming out for help from the Nigerian presidente ..Umaru Yar'Adua.

My mates Mrs is a Thai National...she holds a UK passport....she is not British....her nationality is Thai.

She must be naturalised British if she holds a UK passport - therefore she's British. This is the argument about ethnic Pakistanis in UK and the reason the government now makes you swear allegiance to the Crown when you accept citizenship - to lend gravity to the concept that being British involves loyalty to the Sovereign not to Islam or a distant tribe on the Afghan border.

Rant over.

citizenship v's nationality

Surely someone must know somebody in high places in the FCO to arbitrate this for us

The confusion arises because people think of ethnicity when they're speaking of nationality. Great Britain is a nation state that arose from a deal cobbled together between Scotland and England in the eighteenth century - it's a political concept but it binds us together. Hence anyone who accepts citizenship owes an allegiance to the Sovereign (State or HRH, it doesn't matter). A person who accepts citizenship but has no intention of being loyal to the UK has no right to be here.

Ms Orabator came to the UK, with her family, as a refugee - similar to the back of a truck. So it is doubtful that she would hold a Nigerian passport.

If your mate's Mrs holds 2 passports, that would make her a dual national.

DEAR SIR

I REFER TO MY PREVIOUS EMAIL. AS YOUR HONOURABLE FRIEND, I MUST INFORM YOU THAT I HAVE NOW DONE FURTHER RESEARCH ON THIS SUBJECT - WHICH, OF COURSE, I SHOULD HAVE DONE BEFORE I SENT MY ORIGINAL, MISLEADING NOTE.

I HAVE NOW DISCOVERED THAT BRITAIN HAS A "PROCEEDS OF CRIMES ACT", WHICH IN ALL LIKELIHOOD PRECLUDES MY DAUGHTER FROM MAKING ANY PROFIT (INCLUDING FILM RIGHTS) FROM THE CRIME WHICH SHE COMMITTED IN LAOS.

I REALISE THIS MAKES ME LOOK A BIT SILLY, BUT I HOPE YOU CAN UNDERSTAND, AND FORGIVE ME.............. :D

I am assuming it is the same as Oz, wazza - doesn't matter where the crime is committed, if you are back in Oz, you cannot profit from it.

David Hicks is unable to make any money from his "crime" in Afghanistan, and Corby could not do so if/when she gets back to Oz.

Prisoner swaps are a totally different issue - they are covered by a treaty, although I imagine there would need to be legislation in the respective countries which gave the necessary power to the executive(s) to make such a treaty.

Jack

Thanks for that, as our representative for all human rights and comments on worldly affairs.

I see the Balibo movie is striking a little sore point again, so it should when the Indonesian army murder 5 reporters etc

Yes, even more of a sore point is the the Oz Federal Wallopers (AFP) have (re)opened an investigation into the Balibo murders. The Indos aren't happy.

Hopefully Gough Whitlam is getting some sleepless nights, awaiting the knock on the door :D
